Late yesterday afternoon I received a call from animal control (around 30 miles from where we live) about my black lab who was microchiped and has been missing for 5 years. They were closing and the person said they could meet us to drop off our dog. While we were waiting the family who has had the dog for the past 3 years called animal control looking for their missing black lab.

Not knowing what to do they took the dog back to animal control and have to wait until Monday to decide what the corect potocol is in this situation.

We are thrilled that our dog is alive and has been take care of for the past 3 years. Apparently a family with children rescued him 3 years ago from a shelter. I am sure it would be heartbreaking for them to give him up. We definitely want to see him and make sure he is well.

What a shocker. I can't belive that in 5 years no one else checked to see if he was microchipped. We have a large back yard which is fenced but he was a runner and would find a way out. He is a very loving dog and we assume he either got into someone's car 5 years ago or someone took him from our yard.

We currently have 2 dogs - a shepard mix and a beagle and 3 cats and we are watching MIL's 2 yorkies while she is in the hospital. We have a house full of animals (no kids). This is a little over whelming at times.

I wish they could work something out so we could see Blackie and maybe have visitation rights!! He loves to go boating in the summer.

Blackie was my husbands dog from before we met each other in 2002. So he is deciding what he thinks is best. But we don't even know if the decision would even be up to us at this point.

I wonder if this has happened before to other families and who does Blackie belong to?

awww how sweet.

OMG how crazy!!! So glad he's alive and well though. I faced something similar. We adopted our girl from a rescue. They had her fixed and microchipped her. Well the vet office went to scan the micro chip to make sure the # matches what they have......it didn't. :dunce: SO they scanned her some more and she had another chip from a different chip company. The rescue must have missed that one and put in another one. They said some scanners only scan for one brand (stupid eh?). So they had to call the # for the other chip and make sure no one was looking for her. I was so shocked and nearly in tears thinking that I may have to give her back. Thankfully that chip was linked to a shelter.

I'm sure it's a very difficult decision to make..........let us know what happens.

How old is he?

Here's a very recent story (last week) about a missing micro-chipped husky involving two families and a happy ending:

Dog goes missing twice, returned to original owner -

Breeder saddened by story, meets with second family -

Second family approved for new puppy -

If you have no kids at home I would leave the dog with the family. Think how sad the kids would be :(

I was thinking the same thing too, but of course would totally understand if your DH wants his dog back. Just think..............the dog got at least a couple of loving homes in his life. :bliss:

My kids would be devistated to lose their dog after loving on her for 3 years (and so would I).

WOW!!!! That's crazy! I'm happy to hear he's been taken care of by a family... At least you know he wasn't hit by a car. Our lab is a stinker...he eats our cedar fence and takes off. Our yard is huge...we are on a little over a half acre...fenced in. He goes thru spurts tho. He hasn't chewed his way out in over a year...i think...now quick..knock on wood.

That's amazing tho!

What a hard decision .......................... I would have to learn towards letting the people who cared for him for the last four years keep him. Even though I'm sure he remembers you guys, like skincarekathy said, if they have children they would probably be heartbroken.

My DH had rescued Blackie and our shepard mix in 2001, and they were a few years old then but we never knew their exact age. I think they would be around 12 or 13 years old by now.

I attached a photo of when we had Blackie.

I agree... I had a dog growing up and would have been devestated if we lost him. I wish we could visit with Blackie though. I wonder if he would still remember us and our other dog he grew up with! It's so hard to believe we were 20 minutes away from having him back with us!

I'm sure you did, but did you check all the shelters for a while when he went missing?

Thank you that's so sweet but I could not part with Blondie!!! I'm the cat lady... My DH did suggest maybe we could see if the new family would trade Blackie for our Beagle and my MIL's 2 Yorkies!!! Doubt if they would go for that though!

Lol I read her OP to DH..........he was shocked too. I told him I would take Sadie and run to Mexico if peeps tried to take my gurl. He said "I know you would!" True story.

Re: My dog was found after being missing for over 5 years!

When Blackie first disappeared we checked all of the shelters, vets, put signs up, left lost notices online, checked with Animal control and the microchip service. Everyone in my neighborhood knew our dogs. We have a little neighborhood bar 2 blocks away that is pet friendly, they have a yard in the back. So Blackie had been know to escape from the yard and end up at the bar eating jerky!

It was Thanksgiving weekend when he disappeared in 2006 and we figured someone who was not from our area must have taken him.

Our shepard mix is named Sadie too! This is Blackie and Sadie on the boat.
