My dog was found after being missing for over 5 years...but theres a twist!

Re: My dog was found after being missing for over 5 years!

**** I shoulda moved to your hood!!! :woot:

Love the pic of your dogs. What do you think your DH will do?

Funny thing about my neighborhood. We live in lotus woods, IL. We are in the chain o lakes, surrounded by the water. (mailing address is spring grove but we are 7 miles from downtown Spring Grove, Fox lake is a mile away and unincorporated Antioch is a mile in the other direction.

We have to drive 2.5 miles to the nearest gas station. It's 7 miles to the nearest grocery store!!!! But there is a bar 2 blocks away! (kind of reminds me of the TV show Cheers!) I'm originally from NYC so moving here in 2005 was like culture shock.

DH really wants to see Blackie but I don't think he would try to take him away from a family with kids. Especially if he is loved and cared for.
We feel horrible that the dog is locked up in the pound over the weekend. Wish we could have a least got to see him today. I have to work tomorrow so I don't even know if I can go with him to the animal control place.

So happy your dog is safe and sound! I really think blackie will remember you--they're not called mans best friend for nothing!

Re: My dog was found after being missing for over 5 years!

I am thrilled that you finally found out what happened to him! But, if he's been well cared for by this family for 3 years, especially if they have kids I'd say he should stay there. I would be devastated if it happened to me, but I'd also know that if Brody had a good loving home and new people who rescued him and cared for him for 3 years that leaving him there would probably be in his best interest.

This gives me nightmares...Brody has an "old chip" registered from the person that the person I rescued him from got him from originally. We can't have him rechipped without her consent, which she won't give even though the situation which caused her to give him up originally hasn't changed. She's just being a **** about it because she's pissed that the 2nd person turned around and gave him up. If he ever got away/lost and they scanned him, he'd go back to her. :pout:

Chipping your dog is all well and good, but there really isn't a "loophole" to get a dog rechipped. I "hear" some vets will take the old chip out if you can show a legitimate chain of custody (like in our case we have the craigslist "free to good home" ad, the emails we exchanged etc. but I've yet to find a vet who will actually do it.

Good luck no matter what you decide!!

Re: My dog was found after being missing for over 5 years!

I just find it really strange that our dog was microchipped but no one ever tried to contact us and he was apparently "rescued" three years ago. I'm hoping that we get to hear more about where he had been and how he ended up with another family. I am assuming he was in a shelter. I just figured that shelters would check to see if pets have a chip before getting them adopted.

Like I said not all shelters have chip scanners for all the companies that do them........like in Sadie's case. She now has two chips in her so I have to keep her registered with both companies in case she's lost and they stop with the first chip.

I told my husband about your situation. We've had our Spots now for 2 years, and my son loves her so much (we do too!). We adopted her from the pound at a year old, so she obviously had another owner before us. She was found as a "stray", so she was not dropped off there. The thought of her original owners ever wanting to take her back is devastating.

It must make your heart happy to know your dog has been safe all these years and didn't get hit by a car or suffer outdoors. I'm sorry he might not be coming home with you though.

From the shelter's side of it: In my rescue group we sometimes take in animals that have chips. We do everything we can to contact the previous owners, but sometimes people move or change phone numbers and we just can't contact the original owner. As most no-kill shelters are volunteer-driven, sometimes there just may not be enough man-hours time to scour craigslist and every newspaper for lost pet ads for every single pet.

Quite honestly, we're also somewhat accustomed to people dumping their animals, so when we reach a dead-end, we assume the pet was unwanted and we move on to the next step which is finding a new home for the animal.

I have a "previously owned" pet too. My rescue group said after I adopted him he was legally mine. Possession is 9/10ths of the law in cases like this. We spent thousands on his surgery and vet bills.

I don't have real advice, just wanted to give you hugs and best wishes for an outcome that you can be happy with.

Thanks for your comments! We are extremely happy to know that Blackie is alive and well and has been loved and taken care of!!

I never realized that there were several different scanning companies. We used homeagain. Our contact information is still the same as when our dog disappeared. HomeAgain sent me an email yesterday shortly after the animal control called my cell phone number to say that Blackie had been found.

What an amazing story. I agree that if the dog is being loved and cared for now by his new family it would be best to leave him there, as hard as that would be. Your family has had a chance to get over losing him (as much as you ever can get over that) and to put another family through a similar pain would just seem wrong. I hope you can get to see him and I think it would be wonderful if you could have the other family agree that you guys could visit him from time to time.

All that said, I don't know if I could be strong enough to do what I've just suggested above. Just bein' honest here.

I haven't read all the responses yet. I would be sooooo glad to finally know what happened to him and that he wasn't hit by a car or something.....maybe ask to see him before he goes back to his new family....

I would assume that you guys made peace with his being out of the hh...and you have other animals. I would consider it fate of the way things were meant to be and accept he has a new family (assuming he is in good condition and wanted by them)

I think the peace of mind that he has been well is an amazing gift all on it's own.

You are right 100%. We are hoping we get to see him, would be estatic if they would let us visit with him sometime! I think after all this time he probably belongs with his new family. Would love to find out how he ended up where he is now. We just want to make sure they can confirm that it is a family with kids who now has him and that he is happy. I just want to give Blackie a big hug and kiss!!

Ohhh this is heartwarming! You have the knowledge that he has been safe and well cared for and that his new family wants him back! It makes me happy that his present owners were looking for him and he was not just dumped somewhere.

Thanks for your honesty. This is not going to be easy. I wish the other family would agree to let us see him from time to time. That would be wonderful !! Guess we will know tomorrow what happens.
This is an emotional roller coaster, we were so excited he was found, didn't even has time to think that he proably had a family. One minute we were getting him back and then next minute he no longer belongs to us.

I can't imagine what you're going through.... We don't have our dog microchipped but reading this I'm really thinking I've messed that up. Can I ask how much it cost you guys who do have their pets micro-chipped?

It was very cheap...definitely less than $50, maybe $20ish.

Our dog is a rescue dog who literally found our home nd never left. My son was once approached by someone who said they lived close by and it was their dog, about 1 year after we took her in, chipped her, took her to the vet and she was still a puppy with runaway tendencies. I called DH frantic because she was our baby. These people never came to the house and when I thought about it more, if she ran off that much, wouldn't she go back home?

I am so glad we have had another 5 years with her and many more to go, but I was ready to fight them and pull out all the vet records simply because I felt they were poor owners to not look for a dog in the neighborhood who we put up signs for before claiming. All that to say, get the chip, it is worth it, will protect you, and will save your dogs life if he is ever picked up and doesn't get the luxury of a no kill shelter.

Nancy, I hope you do get visitation rights. You chipped your dog and I feel that it is your dog to take back if you want but you are considering the other family which is wonderful. Me personally would want to check out these people and see with my own eyes that they are on the up and up...which they probably are since they were looking for Blackie.

Good luck....let us know how it goes.

When we called the animal control first thing yesterday morning to speak with the supervisor about the situation they told us that Blackie had already been picked up by the other family. They had him registered and shots up to date for the past 3 years in McHenry county so Blackie is their dog. We were told he is physically in good condition and healthy for his age but he may have some neurological issues. She mentioned that he stares into space sometimes. (Maybe becuase he wonders where his original owners are!) He is around 13 yrs old now.

We were upset that they did not even give us the chance to see him. We asked if they could contact the owners and see if we could see him or if they could e-mail a recent photo. We are going to follow up.

Animal control said they checked with the District attorney's office before giving him to the other family to make sure that according to McHenry county law the dog belongs to the new owners and could not give out any more information and we would have to seek legal action if we wanted to try get Blackie back.

Kind of sad that we did not get to see him.

I am still trying to check what our rights are if we have any. Checking witht he microchip company if this happens often... etc.

We are still very happy to know he is alive and has a family that loves him!

Oh I'm sorry. That had to be very disappointing. I hope you can manage to get in contact with the family.
