Every year there is something unusual. Sometimes they are impossible to find, sometimes you wonder why the school isn't paying for it.

My "weird" school supply items this year are
- earbuds
- dry erase eraser (why can't they use paper towels which don't get stolen or lost?)
- styrofoam paper plates (for my senior's art class)

picked up my niece's list

band aids
cloth book covers

I can see book covers, but cloth? back in the day :giggles: we used paper grocery bags to make book covers

We need 34 pencils. How much writing do they do in 4th grade?

Our supply list includes an old sock for wiping the dry erase boards. The school provides most of the items to start off with and we just have to replenish throughout the year.

That's a good idea!

We home school, so no list, but I did just get 2 packages of toothpicks for a bridge building project we are going to do.

The dry erase eraser are on sale at Staples for a $1. I would get that and cut it in half. The boards they write on are small.

I did this last year thinking my son would lose the eraser, but it come home with his end of the year supplies. I knew for sure he would need the other half. Besides the sock don't get washed the entire year, it looks awful in their desk, which is usually a mess anyway. And if the teacher collects the socks no one knows which sock belongs to who, some kids put their entire hand in the sock to erase and if they are sick and then the next time another child get's that sock....just a thought.

Also about the pencils, pencils today are horrible, I would understand why they would ask to supply a top brand, you can hardly sharpen the pencils that come in bulk from the office stores, the lead breaks and breaks. Sometimes the kids will give the teacher (speaking as a Substitute Teacher) a brand new pencils and the lead breaks until the pencil is a short nub. I just pull out my extra pencils and give them one. Not the parent or the kids fault but the companies that supply bad pencils.

When my DD14 started Kindergarten, she had to have a Magna-Doodle. At the time they were $20. They didn't even use them! :faint:

No weirdness this year. High school isn't too specific. :-/

I school supply shop for about 6 kids and the weirdest is that magnet man. I have seen th odd amount of pencils too. Most of the lists also say that the supplies will need to be replaced thoughout the year as needed. So it can turn out to be many more pencils.

I hate when they get so specific. I understand some brands are better than others (I know I have my preferences), but what about the ones that can't afford the specific item?

We have blue fun tak on our list, I found white and that's what they are getting like it or not. :giggles:

nothing weird, but I just never understand the amount they require as some have said. 6 dry erase markers, all black. I understand that they may use these all year round, but with at least 25 kids in a classroom, 150 markers seem a bit much. I know not all can afford items, but I don't mind when a list in the middle of the year is sent home asking for "donations" of these extra supplies. Just hate having to get such a lump sum at once. (of course I stock up on the cheap and clearance lol) I also hate having to send so many folders and spirals, they either don't get used, or as someone else said, only a few pages are written in.

btw my 4th grader only needs 24 pencils. while my 2nd grader will need 40. However I will only send half, and send half later on.

For my Kindergartner, they are asking for 36 glue sticks. Not weird, but curious what they do with so many.... and they asked specifically requested for Elmers only. (Glad walmart had them for 0.10)

I don't think any of those are weird. I have students use dry erase almost daily in my class. Paper towels are wasteful. HOWEVER...I have them bring in a "clean, but old sock" to use as an eraser...and it stores their dry erase markers in it! :)

Ear buds/ earphones are a necessity in classes nowadays! For listening centers or working on the computer.

LOL and the Magnet Man is to clip their papers to their desk to keep it organized...Like a work in progress spot
