I saw serenity on Saturday and I say :eusa_clap . It was actually good. I thought all the ads on the movie were just by geeks but it was actually good. Would I go to some other city and pay more than $10, $8 with student id, to see a movie from a tv show that was canceled,...no. But the movie was good, when i saw it i thought Star Wars but more kick @$$ and less vzzawh vzzzawh( my rendition of the light saber).:p

Probelly the best way to describe it is to put a western movie in space and make it funny, it was a great series when it was on Fox(Firefly) but got cancelled for some reason. I havent gotten a chance to watch the movie though, seeing as i'm in korea it's not out yet.

Never heard of "Serenity" but I sure as hell could use some about now!

I'll agree - if you're on the fence, you should definitely see it.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into it. In all truthfulness I never much liked Joss Whedon until recently.

I can honestly say it was some of the best original science fiction I've seen in multiple years. I can honestly say I think it was quite possibly the best original science fiction I've seen since the first matrix movie

Some people are screaming instant classic, I don't know that I'd go that far. But I will say, I thought it was a very ballsy film, very creative.

Ug...what's it about...how to describe

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/serenity/about.php

Joss Whedon- the Oscar®- and Emmy-nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel-now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity.

The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

When Mal takes on two new passengers-a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister-he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself.

Serenity is written and directed by Joss Whedon; produced by Barry Mendel; and executive-produced by Chris Buchanan, Alisa Tager and David Lester.

Joss Whedon is such a freak. Who the heck else could get this movie made?
Don't get me wrong, in my mind. It's a compliment. I never much liked him until recently. I totally skipped the buffy/angel years. But if Serenity and Firefly are any indication he's a very good writer. Great characterization, exceptional dialogue.

I'll be keeping an eye on him for a while.

Two Thumbs Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched the a season of the show when it was still on sci-fi channel. i figured if it had a good show then it was going to have a really good movie.:applaus:

I loved Serenity. I finished watching the entire season 2 days before watching the movie... I thought the movie was soo good, that I had to take 2 other friends to see it with me for my 2nd time.... On the same day. Hands down, one of the best movies this year... IMHO.

You lose points Rascal...Buffy and Angel make me want to lock myself in a room with people scratching chalkboards..

Firefly on the otherhand is excellent.

I have to say I'm not the biggest fan of Buffy or Angel but I loved Firefly. I might've liked Buffy better if Gellar wasn't the star. Aside from her chest that girl annoys the hell outta me. Serenity rocked, IMO. I've read quite a few reviews on it today, and so far only one was close to negative. And that one didn't even have half their facts straight so they made it obvious they didn't know what they were reviewing. Calling Inara Mal's ex-girlfriend? C'mon... Even bias aside it's the best movie I've seen in a long time. I haven't sat in a theater (on more than one night at that) & had the entire audience laughing & gasping then clapping at the end for a movie in a looooong time. There aren't that many of the die-hard Browncoats like myself in the Springs area either so I'd say over half were new to the show or only somewhat familiar with it.

I'm just glad that other piece of fei yoo that would supposedly beat it did so lousy. Only good thing about that movie would be Alba in a bikini. I can't complain too much about the Jodie Foster flick beating it by a bit. It's a typical premise for her movies but looked alright. Kind of a mix between Panic Room & Air Force One. I'll likely wait 'til it's on DVD.

i hate going off topic (no i don't lol), but buffy was so awesome. angel was so-so, i never got into it, except for one awesome episode where he got turned into a muppet. i'm sorry, vampire muppets? that was freakin' hilarious! lol. i think it was in the last or second last season, so if anyone gets a chance to see that episode, do, it's truly wonderful. i mean, vampire muppets! where does that go wrong?? joss whedon is definately a cool guy, and he really got another good show in firefly, which i continually missed 'cuz they flipped it to so many different time slots i just got dizzy and gave up. but the movie was definately fun even if you know nothing about the show.

Back on topic....

I saw Serenity today, and I really enjoyed it. A wonderully refreshing, new piece of science fiction. I like the story, the plot development, and the characters. I am going to pick up Firefly now, and watch it. I give Serenity:

1 Bash = 3 Star Movie = A Very Good Film

More then you think there are. Maybe I just work in the right circles - But in the poser IT circles there's plenty of Joss freaks even if we all aren't into firefly.

I'll admit it, I didn't get it at first. The western/sci-fi mix. Firefly, and to a lesser extent, Serenity, tries for really is a ridiculous concept. Let me get this straight, we have spaceflight - but still use can openers for crying out loud???

The trick, which I had no idea, is to just suck it up and watch for a while. If one can get over the fundamental ridiculousness of the setting, the writing is exceptional. The characterization and dialogue is pretty much what sucks u in. I honestly think it's a good thing that Serenity downplayed the sillyness with the cow hustling in the ship, and the yes mam, and all that other garbage. Then again, Ariel was my favorite episode; and most of that was filmed on an alliance core planet.

It's something of a pity that it doesn't look Serenity is grossing very well. I enjoyed it, everyone I've talked to who's seen it has enjoyed it - but it's not grossing much more then 10 mil, and wallace and gromit opens this weekend against it, so allot of reluctant father's are likely to get stuck seeing wallace and gromit when they'd rather see something like Serenity. 45 million isn't much of a budget, but it'll probably make that back, especially when you figure in DVD sales. I just think it's a bit of a pity. I've seen Joss Whedon say publicly several times in interviews, "I'm not done with this, I'd like to come back to it. But the simple fact is, it depends on how well this movie does" (Of course, I'm paraphrasing, but the intent is the same. The bean counters will approve the next project based on how well this one did)

i agree...very cool movie.

and if i may say, buffy was the: greatest. show. ever.

:puke:

Sorry I threw up alittle bit there? You mean to say you liked that show?

Sorry, just alittle biased. An old coworker of mine, was a HUGE buffy fanboy. Every day he would have to talk about. I wanted to blow my brains out. I have watched two episodes, I liked the movie better, and I hated the movie.

I'd be happy if it does $45 million. It was about a $40 million movie, and word on the street (supposedly from Joss) is that if it at least makes back what they put into it they'll make two more. Not too many studios would be willing to make two more movies just because the first made it's cost back, but not too many studios would've made it in the first place.

I watched serenity yesterday. I have to say I loved it. It was a great film and suggest everyone who hasn't sene it does.

and it's great that msot of you liked it too!! :D

I thought the movie was good enough that I might have to go out and buy Firefly, just to compare, since i hear that the tv show was better.

The show adds more background & was aimed at the niche audience more. The film was great but they adjusted a few things to make it more compatible with a larger audience supposedly. Serenity looks 'prettier' in the movie than the series, their clothes are a touch more futuristic in materials & design while still harking to the original outfits, more space stuff than western stuff, etc. Plus you have more of the characters overall. In various episodes some get more airtime than others like in the movie but each gets their fair share over the whole time. There were other small differences too that IMO didn't hurt the movie, just trivia stuff (ie the mule was originally just an ATV, although it got torched pretty bad in one episode so would've had to've been replaced anyway).

Definitely a worthwhile buy though. There's an easter egg with Adam Baldwin on the last disk as well, drop me a PM if you get the disks & can't find it after you watch 'em. ;)
