We just got a new dog this weekend. It's been a while since we've had a dog, and certainly not since I've been couponing. So, I have to ask the dog owners out there. Are you brand loyal on dog food, or do you buy what's the best deal with coupons and flip-flop?

My stray dog that literaly we found outside our house eating garbage has a sensitive stomach so we have to use nutro or she will throw-up and get sick.

Recently nutro has been having some coupons though, so that has been nice. We buy the big bag at petsmart or petco and it cost about $40 and last about 3 months. Coupons have been about $5 off

Yes... I am brand loyal... from what I understand if you switch around too much it messes with a pets tummy. :pout: So when I find a deal on OUR brand I REALLY stock up!

Thanks MrsPiggy. I seem to recall hearing the same thing, that's why I'm asking.

Brody will only eat Kibbles & Bits Mini-Bits. I'm not sure its the most nutritious food out there but he will literally starve himself rather than eat anything else. Although he did like the "meat" part of the Chef Michael's dry food when that was free at Target, but he hid the vegetable parts all over the house.

My dogs have always gotten the runs when we switch... but if I make a gradual switch its better. introduce small amounts of the new food to the old food and slowly get rid of old food...it goes much easier =)

But I usually stay brand loyal. If I do find a good deal on another kind, like when the bags of Pro-plan were free...I would add small amounts of that to their normal food.

Guess that's one dog that the kids can't sneak their vegetables to under the table! I picked up the Kibbles and Bits last night and Shortcake has ate every bit we've been putting down, so I think that's what we'll stick with as well.

:giggles:

I have started to combine Winnie and Tibbers food cause they each eat each others food... so when I run outta Winnies food I am just going to stick to Puppy food... I hear it's better for ALL dogs anyways as there are more vitamins and butrition and less fillers!

We're brand loyal too, our dog has a sensitive stomach. We do California Natural, it's pricey but a great quality food. Better food that goes in, means less coming out.

Congrats on the pooch!

Small bags were on sale at Menards last week with a mail in rebate making them $0.99 a bag..not sure if that sale continued this week (unadvertised?)

I dont know about that...lol...my puppy is eating Eukanuba and there is ALOT coming out!!! lol

I should double check with DH, he's the one who cleans the yard! :giggles:

Seriously though, our dog is 90 pds and I'm amazed at...well...what isn't there.

Im sure its just because he is a puppy. I have heard that the end result is a good thing when you use good food, so just got to wait and see...lol

Tuffy only gets Nutro Lamb & Rice or Kent feeds - Native Sport dog when he is working. We researched the dog food with our trainer, vet, and breeder - as well as other working dog owners and feel for him and his work this is the best option. That said neither is cheap and with him being 78lbs we go through a 40lb bag in 3-4 weeks and at $58-65 per bag DH swears the dog eats better than he does :) lol

What kinda pooch ya got? Would love to see pics. :)

Rover Rescue foster dogs get Royal Canin, Purina kibble and whatever free stuff like Chef Michel I can get.
Some trainers swear by a raw diet. Like a chicken leg/back. When its raw, they can chew the bones without them splintering and causing gastro problems, be it chicken, pork or beef. And the output is small and literally washes away with rain. I know a foster family that feeds their own dog raw and the diarrhea stopped when they made the switch. If you can find a food store that would donate to you, awesome. Using expired Wags RR at Doms makes clearance meat really cheap.

I thought about the raw diet when we got Sadie, but we have a tiny house and as it is she drags her kibble all over the house....I don't want her eating raw meat with dripage all over kwim?

A friend of mines hubby keeps trying to convince me to go raw with Tibbs... I just imagine it to be SUPER expensive!
