Directly, money does not buy happiness. Psychologists say that if someone suddenly becomes rich, he or she will feel great at first, but after a while will be no more happy than they were beforehand.
However, I believe that indirectly in can make you happy. One example is say you want to quit a job that you hate but you can't because you need the money. Being rich would allow you to actually quit. Or say you hate working in general. You can stop and take a permanent vacation. And a third example is say you want to travel. Having tons of money makes a big difference in that department.
So yeah, being rich matters when it comes to happiness.
