Competitive eating

I don't even know what could be called a sport and what couldn't, anymore. I just couldn't see people eating hot dogs for medals in the Olympics :P

On a side note, I've noticed people in the US seem to love eating comps (from YouTube and video shows). Lots of people gathered around the poor guys who will then get a stomachache :P If that's what they like to do for money, alright, but I don't see a point in cheering someone to eat.

The idea behind playing a sport is to stay in shape. Competitive eating contradicts that idea completely.

What's kind of ironic about this statement is that a lot of the top competitive eaters are actually in really great shape. An over-weight, obese man is who you think would be the one dominating these competitions. But in reality, you see small, little men winning, who actually keep themselves in great shape.

I definitely think it is a sport, but I also think poker and competitive video game playing is a sport. To me, the modern definition of "sport" is two individuals or teams competing against each other in a regulated, competitive environment.

I think it is a sport insofar as there is a lot of training involved, there is risk of bodily injury, and there's a market for it. I don't feel however, that it fits in with the conventional idea of what a sport ought to be. Who knows, things may change in the future. At one point, snowboarding was considered a joke and was not accepted by the Olympic Committee and now it is. Man, Kobayashi is a beast in this arena.

I've yet to have that "tequila experience" that makes everyone shy away from tequila. Yet to get sick from it, I'm sure it'll happen some day though. This morning I actually woke up and felt great. :)

I never have either. I just don't like it.

It is some what of a sport in the sense that it is a competition, and is a "skill" but I wouldn't dirrectly call it a sport haha

Competitive eating should not be considered a sport, because it does not involve athletics. It is just a competition, and that is all.

It is crazy how a lot of eating competitors are in great shape, seeing how they eat huge amounts of food. I eat just a little bit and i already gain fat!

You do have to be in pretty good shape to do competitive eating though, right? At the very least, your metabolism rate has to be pretty extreme to endure those types of competitions over the course of many matches. What's the name of the Japanese guy who seemingly wins every hot-dog-eating contest? He's not exactly fat. He looks like someone who goes to the gym a lot.

I don't think competitive eating should be considered as a sport for two cases. One: there is no physical activity involved in eating. Two: there is no unique skill or training involved either. How do you prepare for a competitive eating competition? I don't know of anyways to eat more than my body can handle; if you know of some, please inform me :).

This, took the words out of my mouth.

Of course it isn't a sport. Is tiddlywinks a sport? What about ribbon twirling? Where do you draw the line?

This is ridiculous, of course it's not a sport! There needs to be more skills at hand that just stuffing yourself with food as fast as you can. Other sports combine more than one skill at a time and that's why they're considered REAL sports.

This is not a showcase of physical ability in terms of pushing your body in an athletic way. In the same sense, should binge drinking be considered a sport as well?

You guys have to understand that this sort of stuff, they don't do it EVERYDAY. It happens once in a blue moon, and it's pretty easy to get a deficit prior to the competitive eating.

It's funny how the BEST competitive eaters are the really healthy ones. Pete, Kobayashi, Black Widow. You can tell that you need a lot of health in order to eat like that as well.

To be honest you could argue it's a sport considering its a pretty difficult and physically demanding activity. It's even got fans who watch the best eaters who can shove down the most food. The thing is it's an incredibly unhealthy activity, it's on par with a competition with who drinks the most alchohol, to be honest it's very unhealthy and quite dangerous to eat that much so I'm not sure I could consider it an actual sport.
