Last year, right before Halloween we had a major snow storm. Trees down all over, power out, etc. I was just looking at my local Patch site and saw this lovely little story...

http://pearlriver.patch.com/articles/forecasters-ponder-storm-scenarios-as-sandy-heads-north

The National Weather Service is closely monitoring Hurricane Sandy to see what impact it might have on the area as it moves up the coast. Sandy officially strengthened to hurricane level as it hit Jamaica today, according to the National Weather Service.
"But it's what could happen after that that has some weather forecasters pondering some rather bizarre scenarios — think if a hurricane and nor'easter mated, possibly spawning a very rare and powerful hybrid storm, slamming into the Boston-to-Washington corridor early next week, with rain, inland snow, damaging winds, and potential storm surge flooding," said Andrew Freedman, blogging for Climate Central.
The impact the storm has on New York depends on how the storm tracks over the next five days or so. :tap:
Bryan Norcross, hurricane specialist for the Weather Channel, says the forecasting models are beginning to agree but it's still too early—the main concern now is the Caribbean islands that are in the storm's path.
Whether the storm moves out to sea or up the coast, the National Weather Service says a large area could be affected based on its size.

Oh my. I remember my sister's town (in CT) cancelled trick or treating because conditions were so bad.

Re: They better be joking (weather related ****ing)

Better go put your garbage out in preparation for that snow storm!!

If you could please request that it hold off until Tuesday, that would be lovely. We are flying to NY Friday and coming home Monday night. ;)

Never gonna let me forget that, are you? :tap:

Sorry, no - I will not let you forget that!! ;)

DH's family is in Long Island and CT. His aunt and uncle (also his godparents) are having their 50th wedding anniversary party on Saturday in CT. Plus, this trip then also gets us out of going to NY over the holidays....cause - "Well honey - we were just there!"

Re: They better be joking (weather related ****ing)

The meteorologists here are starting to get hyper, but chances are it'll go out to sea.

Uncle's boat is already pulled out of the harbor, cleaned & shrink wrapped for winter.

Bro's boat, well, he's decided to keep it in all winter, for the first time. He was too busy to get in many boating days this summer, may have better luck in fall & winter. It is still at the dock at the marina. Might make a nice target for Sandy

Re: They better be joking (weather related ****ing)

Shiiiiit, I wish a hurricane would hit DH's boat that is STILL sitting in my driveway! :gah: I told him this morning he can move it this weekend or I'll do it next week. Since I can hardly drive the empty boat trailer, he's making some calls today. ;)

I feel like I'm in MI with a big blue tarp in my driveway. :surrender: (Sorry MI peeps, but you guys know how common the "Michigan Blue Tarp" is. )

Re: They better be joking (weather related ****ing)

Kerri (kaeg1) just posted this to her fb page - :hides:

For my local friends- I know you may think I am a tad crazy about the weather but... please pay attention to the weather in the next few days. There may be to 20" rains possible from this storm along with 100mph wind gusts. This is beginning to look like something along the lines of the 'storm of the century'. Put your outside items away in the next few days and stock up on water and supplies.

Oh heck yes~ I have been watching the weather models, water temps, air temps for over a week now and this very well could hit up pretty bad. I do try hard not to hype my friends cause they get ****y but this is starting to look a tad scary.

Your description sounds kinda like Hurricane Irene.

Re: They better be joking (weather related ****ing)

I remember the storm last year...forgive me as the name escapes me. But dh's family live in Seaford and Massapequa - right on the water. There was a mandatory evacuation so they went inland for the night. Nothing happened to either of their houses and the house they went to lost all power. Go figure!

Probably Irene - it was in August last year. That was the first storm I remember where they were really pushing to clear everything that wasn't tied down outside. They were building it up like crazy. It was the first time NYC shut down it's transit system in anticipation of a storm.
