Huntington, Sylvan, Kumon. Baby is struggling with 8th grade language arts and me tutoring him has not been effective. In any private environment (he has had private tutors before) he gets too comfortable then his charm turns on and nothing gets learned LOL.
His school did not meet AYP for language arts 3 years in a row so tutoring is available to us at no cost.
Anyone with experience with centers? Anyone worked at one? Sent their kid to one?
I haven't had my kids go to one of these yet, but I recently bought a living social deal that includes a full assessment and 6 private tutoring sessions. I plan on using it for my 9 year old dd sometime this year as she has a tendency to be very disorganized with her schoolwork. Keep an eye out for a groupon or living social deal, I was really happy that I got the one I did. I think it was $99 or $149 for the whole thing.
Kumon is great in my opinion. Especially for his "charm" to not work. My son went just for supplemental and it was great for his math, this was years ago and everyone I have heard since then loves it.
But they dont "tutor" the specific area his teacher might say he needs help on directly. The go back to the basics and you move forward until you get stuck
You might call and check credentials. One time we were at the mall shopping--they had KUMON there--this lady approaches my dd---says--I can tell you have a gift with children (she does)) I think you should come work for us. Explains she will be tutoring and the things she could do---and then talks to her---
My daughter knows how to get to the unconventional learner--since she had to teach herself how to learn etc---so she does have a gift--BUT they just picked her as we were walking---she does not have a degree!
We said we would think about it--we gave them our number--they called us over and over wanting her to work, the explained the pay etc--the owner said I can tell you are good and I want you.
I thought--hmm if I was paying big bucks for tutoring--I think I might expect someone with a degree.
So--it may not be what you are expecting. (Though I will say my dd would have been great--so this can be good or bad)
I have a friend who is a teacher--she works at a few of the places--so if you want I can ask her-what she thinks. Which one she feels is the best.
Another friend used Sylvan--for her 7th grade son-said they did a good job assessing and he went for 6 weeks. They discontinued because they felt their son was not doing the work required (so nothing against the facility)
We inquired with Sylvan. Then decided on private tutoring. DS was in 7th grade. 4 years later we are still getting phone calls from Sylvan. Not sure if they care about the child or the $$$$.
