So, we (are not) getting a dog?

So..... The owner of this little Bichon Friese is a friend of a friend. He is a divorced dad and only sees the kids every other week, and his work hours changed and he's gone 11 hours a day now.

He feels bad to leave the dog home alone all that time. So... looking for a new home.

My kids have been asking for a dog for several years but I've always said no. You guys have convinced me that it *can* be an affordable expense.... Kind of excited but haven't said anything to the kids yet.

He will be 1 year old in March.

Bichons require grooming. Every 6 weeks or so.

You can get clippers (different from people clippers) and do it on your own, or have a groomer do it.

My pup goes to the groomer. I spend much more on her hair maintenance than I spend on mine.

$50 at groomer every 6 weeks, about $400 for the year for vetting, includes heartworm meds (Revolution).

She is a budget item for us.

Cute dog! You will love the companionship. I love my honeybunny...

And Bichons are usually picked out for a grooming standard. If left natural, that baby's hair is way too long...

Also Bichons have hair, not fur, so they are hypoallergenic. My dog also has hair. In the warmer weather, she needs a bath about every 2-3 weeks or she smells a bit like BO. I wash her with baby shampoo, no issues.

My aunt in law had a dog like this, it does requir we grooming, but was super sweet, great with kids (and great for people with allergies, no shedding:-)

my sister and good friends are both crazy about this breed -sister had her 1st one for 13 years and now has her second for about 2 years - friends same thing , but they adopted 2 older ones about 2 years ago that spent their lifes breeding for puppy mills ( they had never lived out of a cage before - let me tell you that they are very spoiled now and living the life of a dog or some times i think human lol - best of luck !

I say grab him now especially if he is potty trained--one less headache for you to think about.

good luck! Have a fund set up for vet bills because pets do get sick, hurt, and eat things they shouldn't, and there is no way to skimp on emergency veterinary care.

you can do the shots and heart worm yearly for allot less cost by going to one of the low cost clinics. usually the pet stores have them at the store every other weekend.

We (heather and I) had a bichon frise when we were kids. He was NOT very nice. Bit me every chance he got, did not liked to get groomed, bit the groomer and we couldn't take him back. We tried to groom him ourselves, that didn't work. I would have a few meetings with the dog and the kids to see how they interact. Good luck.

Our ex-next door neighbors had a Bichon. Smartest, most human-like dog I have ever met. Like Kathy said, plan on grooming expenses. I also agree that his hairdo is wrong for his breed, but mebee it fits his personality???
 
So..... we decided to take a pass on this fine canine opportunity.

Too many variables in our lives that could change in the next year or two, would be better not to have an extra household member and have our pockets $$ fuller.

Kinda sad, but its part of being the responsible adult.
