I recently started using SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Life @ home) again, and started wondering if there was such a thing as an official Wiredgamers group crunching away on the data packages.....
It might be an interesting Idea, as I'm almost sure that the gaming freaks visiting these sites have PCs whose power is completely wasted when not playing games....
basically, SETI@home is a distributed computing program whereby data from the worlds' largest radio telescope is taken, and redestributed to everyone that downloaded the SETI client onto their machines.
The client runs in two modes, the most popular being screensaver mode. It basically acts as a screensaver, though instead of merely displaying boring graphics at you, it uses your pcs unused power (your PC is idle when the screensaver is on) and processes the data.
You can of course also run the client the whole time, whereby it just uses all spare CPU power in the background to work on the data.
It's also possible to sign up to groups. That's my main point....Groups are merely several SETI users who add their Processing times together.....there are several such groups, all trying to process as much data in as little time as possible......
