We are taking a short trip to Naigara Falls in August. Anything that is a must see or do?

What about hotels? We are tied between splurging at a Fallsview room at the Embassy Suites for about $400 per night or being thrifty at about 1/2 of that.

Its hard to travel with the 2 kids that are 19 & 16. 3 grown men plus myself take up a lot of space so we need a room with at least a sofa bed. The hotels on the Canadian side automatically add an extra $25 to $40 per night for an extra adult. Plus an extra $25-$35 per day for parking. Crazy!!!

If you're not going to stand in your hotel room window & get $200 worth of admiring the falls in, I would opt for a lesser hotel room.

DH & I stopped at Niagara on our way home from Vermont a couple years ago. It really is amazing...tv doesn't do it justice! Have fun!

Go for a cheaper room, many, many hotels are really close to the falls.

We did stay on the Canadian side, about 2 blocks from the falls, but it was just hubby and I in those days.

Weather for us was pretty crummy, so we didn't do tooo much.

Falls at night is a must. Maid of the Mist is pretty much a must too.

my bff just got back from a trip to the falls. They stayed on the Canadian side-and had a room with a view--she posted pictures and it was amazing. She said her dh loved just sitting there and enjoying the view from the hotel.
I have to agree, though if you are not going to be using the view--then just go to a cheaper place, save the money and use the money towards something else on your trip. My friend posted pictures of maid of the mist--too said that was really nice.
She was there during Canada days and said the fireworks over the falls were amazing.
They also did an east coast tour of sorts--visited different areas up that way---

I think under current rules you cannot go into Canada without a passport - is that correct?

I had thought of going on a trip to see something DH wants to see in Toronto, but from my reading of the rules all adults must have a passport. He has one, I don't. Does not seem worth it to me for a one-time trip.

Just something to look into....

We all have passports already. Passports are good for 10 years so the expense can really be justified. This way you can also go to Mexico etc.

I am really leaning towards the less expensive room. I would love to be able to sit in my room and look at the falls but I can't justify the expense.

Now I wish I would have paid more attention to the Groupons that were available a while back. They were for hotels on the Canadian side.

We are going to Niagara Falls / Toronto in August as well. I heard that the Canadian side is a better view. I also heard that maid of the mist is a must as well.

We are going on road trip with my brothers family and my sister and her husband.
We all have passport except the kids which only require a birth certificate if driving into canada. If you fly, everyone needs a passport.

We were just there a few weeks ago! I would say stay in something less expensive~ we did do the groupon deal for the four points sheraton but it still ended up pricey with no view! The taxes and parking were outrageous and if you stay in the Embassy, you can walk to see the view, but it's too long a walk to get to the "main strip" where lots of shops and touristy things to do are - and then you have to pay for parking again (not too expensive, but still)! There's a day inn on centre, that I would've totally stayed in had I not been acting snobby when I was booking and looking at hotels! I think it was abit cheaper and you could walk on down the main street, see the views and walk over Rainbow Bridge, where you can enter the US side - do the Maid of the Mist on US side - it's about $5 cheaper per person!!! It costs 50cents to pp to cross the bridge but it's nice walking into the state Park in New York - we spent a few hours on that side - very safe inside the state park! Also, if you want to get soaked, do the Cave of winds tour on the US side!! We didn't feel the need as you could walk up a pile of stairs on US side and get super close to the falls - winds & water!!! Well, hope this helps somewhat!

The laws changed back in 2009.

Canada Border Services does not require U.S. citizens to present a passport to enter Canada, however, Americans do need a passport or equivalent travel document to get back into the U.S.

Thanks,

Its an OK deal but we have my older son with us and he is considered an adult. (doesn't act like one though sometimes)

We would have to get two rooms plus parking is $19 a day.

Not sure if it is a deal or not but there is Niagara Falls hotel on Groupon....

we just went a few weeks ago. there was a livingsocial deal it was great! $119 for our room at the Wyndham Garden Fallsview. good hotel nice people. we upgraded for a falls side view but its so built up in canada side that its hard to actually see. we watched the 4th of july fire works from our room and it rocked. they do fire works twice a week in the summer over the falls, must maid of the mist tour into the falls, there is a pass with many of the popular tourist attractions but did not do it. it is worth it if you decided to do more than one of the attractions. "Adventure Pass!" http://meetings.niagaraparks.com/tours-attractions/summer-pass.html

for adult we had dinner in the Skylon Tower is expensive but well worth the view! we did the non-rotating deck but you can eat at either. if you have questions just ask. the Canadian information center have lots of coupons too... also about an hour away there the African lion safari were you drive thought the zoo and the animals are out side your car door not behind exhibits or bars. the suv in front of us had baboons jump on top of their car, it was awesome!
