hey folks
didn't have to worry about this in the dorms
but i'm back home and my office is HOT
machine keeps freezing up due to overheating
i need a cooling system that keeps the WHOLE case cool, and I would LIKE to be able to monitor the temp
i'm looking for CHEAP and EASY mind you
i havent done any research since i'm not much of an overclocker
so any info you can provide would be nice
thanks

Here are some things you can try:

  • Use thermal compound on the CPU
  • Employ some case fans to aid circulation inside the case
  • This may seem very simple, but move the case away from any tight, enclosed spaces. Close to a wall or corner is not good.
    [/list=a]

The basic is to get the cooler air in, and the warmer air out. That 3rd point is often overlooked, but it can't be stressed enough: you can have 50 fans inside your computer, but if the warm air is blocked from getting out, it doesn't make a **** difference.

but the machine is LOUD
so id rather not have the case open
sigh

Make sure you have a consistent flow of air (ie: front to back or back to front) If you have air going willy-nilly, like it sounds like you do right now, you're going to have turbulence, which will create tons of noise. You'll also have stagnant air, which will typically be hot. You want to get your hot areas in an area of air flow, so the hot air gets whisked away. I'll post some pics somewhere before the end of next week so you can see how I modded my case to cut down on noise and reduce heat. The way my case is right now, I can barely hear it, yet I have 10 fans in the system.

moonsee> Believe it or not, you'll get better cooling and airflow by maximizing the airflow within the case, and closing the case back up. By taking the side off, you're allowing air that would normally circulate within the case to stop flowing within the case and escape, creating pockets where you probably don't have any airflow, just air sitting there warming up your components.

Okay, sorry it took me so long to get around to posting pics, but I finally did. The case is an Antec KS180 with the 300W PS. To put it simply, it has a lot of space. If you want to check out the pics, go here . Be forewarned, the page has 6 graphics around 40k each. If you're on dial-up, take a break while the page loads.
