Every now & then I decide it's time to come out of the dark ages and get a cellphone. Haven't actually taken the plunge yet but I'm at that stage again. Over the holidays two friends were singing the praises of i-phones to me so I started looking into those. **** they're expensive.

Another friend suggested getting a cheap cellphone just for emergencies and going with a mini-ipad. He said his gf has a $20/month plan for the i-pad. He also suggested Siri is the devil. :giggles:

I've been looking online at some plans and my head is spinning. You have to choose how much data you'll need. How the hell should I know?!?

So, if you've got some time and have some pity on me, tell me about your phone and plan.

Dumb it down for me as much as possible. Seriously.

:foryou:

I'm thinking of switching to Boost - I think the unlimited plan is $55 a month (and that can drop to $40 a month) with one of the "has everything (like a built in GPS) but the kitchen sink phones".

So that's my recommendation.

Emmy has Boost. So far so good. Price is good...you can get as fancy/boring a phone as you want.

I don't have internet...but Emm does and she loves it.

I have a Samsung Stratosphere.

I really like it. It's my 3rd Samsung phone, because they're pretty durable compared to most phones. My dh dropped his last one on the concrete floor at work multiple times and it was fine. My 16 year old niece bought herself and I phone and told me that the whole back is glass! I'd still make sure you get a good case for it. I also like that it has a pull out keyboard which I find much easier to type on, especially if you have long nails.

As for data, don't let them talk you into a ton! We have the smallest package Verizon has. With 5 smartphones on the plan and we have yet to go over. When we got the phones they told us we'd need at least 4 times what we have. You can set it so that you get a text when you've used half your data for the month (at least with Verizon you can) and can always change the plan to allow more data if you need it.

We all have iPhones. I cannot imagine having anything else ever again. It is SO EASY to use- calls, texts, Internet, app installation, music, GPS feature, etc. I have the minimum data package (200mb, I think?) & have never gone over my limit. I use wifi at home & wherever I can when I am out. I like that I can talk/text/surf at the same time. I have AT&T, DH has Verizon (work issued phone) and he cannot do everything at once.

Just took a look at their website - so I buy the phone and then sign up for their service? That would rule out an i-phone since they're very high without a contract, correct?

Will I basically get as much "bells & whistles" from any smart phone or does it really pay to get an i-phone? (remember, dumb it down please)

Can you tell me how much you pay each month for your plan? I was looking at Verizon and couldn't find anything for under $100/month for i-phone plans.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iphone but am seriously considering getting rid of it and getting a non-smart phone. Reasons...

#1 It's expensive to have the data plan
#2 My iPhone 4 is starting to have some issues and I don't want to drop a couple hundred dollars on a new 5
#3 We've got two iPads, two iMacs at home, I could get away without having the iPhone when I leave the house
#4 I'm getting kind of tired of always feeling attached to technology
#5 I'm not gone from my house very often and if I am, I usually don't need to be connected to FB or the internet or playing mindless game apps, while fun, it's just not needed
#6 When I am gone from my house, it's usually for family outings/vacations and I try to avoid being connected during that time anyways

So I will go back to a basic phone/text only and I will survive.

I just pop the iPad in my purse when I'll be away from home sitting in some office....I have the basic phone now.

I have Boost for the Android, you do step down $5 for every 6 on time payments up to 3 step downs. When I first got my plan I didn't have Android (which is an extra $5 per month). I went from $50 per month to $35 per month (now I pay 40). I have unlimited talk, text and web. I got the Samsung Replenish (it was about $99), made from recycled materials (:words:) it's part touch screen and part keyboard (kind of looks like a Blackberry) they don't make it anymore (common with Boost phones, they will have one for a year or so and then poof it gets replaced).

I love Boost, like serious hard on love for Boost. My phone has lots of fancy bells and whistle capabilities, one of my favorites is Voice Search. If I'm driving down the road and want/need to look something up I just tap it and tell it what I want. If I'm looking for a Starbucks, I just tell it Starbucks and it maps the closest one (via GPS of my current location) there is even a "call" button if you want to call the place you have just searched for.

You can also use it to search the web, we were in the car the other day and mistah was trying to remember one of Nelly's hit songs, I tapped it and said "Nelly, top hits" and poof brought up a web page of them.

You can't go wrong with Boost IMO :)

First, Siri is the devil. She has a bad attitude too!

Second, it does not have to be that expensive. We all have smart phones and pay about $50 per month each, after taxes and fees and Not counting the iPad becAuse i use my phone hotspot for that. We never go over minutes, data, etc.

I'm not sure because we have 5 phones & that is about $250/mo*. :hides: However, my mom has ATT, too, and she looked into it last week. She currently pays $50/mo for her non-smartphone and to upgrade to an iphone w/ the data plan, ATT told her it would be $79/mo.

(*So embarrassed by that ridiculous bill that I have to justify it by saying, "Our kids buy their own phones/pay upgrade fees/ pay for their data plans.") Two months in a row now none of them could "afford" it. Wrath of Mom kicked in with a big lecture on how if I bought crapp(ier) cars & cancelled everyone's phones, I COULD HAVE A LAKE HOUSE AND NOT SEE ANY OF YOU EVERY WEEKEND!!! :gah: Everyone ponied up. :p

The other thing I was going to say is we all have the 4 or the 4S model. I think the difference is Siri or no Siri. I have the 4S & *never* use Siri. She can't understand me and it's a pain in the ****, imo. When DD18 switched from her Blackberry to an Iphone, she got the 4 for .99c. I doubt you need all the bells & whistles of the 4S or the new 5, so you might be able to get a cheap 4.

We just added my DS15 and DD12 to our plan and everyone got iphone5's my DS17 was already on our plan. we have sprint with unlimited everything. before iphones we have always carried the insurance on our phones more for the service warranty things than the replacement. we have had android phones for 2 years and when we started looking at adding him on i realized that if i bought iphones and purchased apple care we could save $7 a month having 5 iphones vs 4 android with insurance and family locater. that and the fewer problems with iphones vs android sold it for me. everyone has 1 and everyone is beyond happy. FYI my bill is 212.50 plus tax for 5iphones with unlim text and data ulim calls to any mobile number and 7pm night and weekends and 1500 min which we use about 300 of each month. I should also note i am going to cancel my house phone now that everyone has cell phones and that will save me $30.

Boost phones are generally cheaper at Target than they are through Boost. DS18 got this one for Christmas and I paid $59.99 at Target (not on sale IIRC) and Boost wants $99 http://www.boostmobile.com/shop/phones/kyocera-hydro/

How does your son like the phone? I couldn't find it on Target's site but saw it on RadioShack for $79.

$80 for the phone plus $50/month I think I could do.

Oh and I always stay one iPhone behind and have never paid more than $50 for my iphones. Some have been less than $1

Wow - that's with one of the plans I'm guessing. It seems if you only have one phone it's just more expensive (per phone at least.)

Never knew much about Siri but it's obvious she's not loved. :giggles:
