Milk better than sports drinks

"Milk protein is roughly 20% whey and 80% casein. Thus far in the scientific literature, comparisons of casein-dominant proteins with whey for sports applications are evenly split. Some studies show casein as superior (in spite of a higher leucine content in the whey treatments) [9,10], while others point to whey as the victor [11,12]. The only certainty is that it can’t be assumed that faster is better when it comes to promoting net anabolism. An acute study on post-ingestion amino acid kinetics by LaCroix suggests that milk protein is best left as-is rather than isolating its protein fractions [13]. Compared to total milk protein, whey’s amino acid delivery was too transient, and underwent rapid deamination during the postprandial period. The authors concluded that milk proteins had the best nutritional quality, which suggested a synergistic effect between its casein and whey"

Thanks for pasting that but it doesn't mean anything to me. Whey protein is the fastest absorbing protein and therefore the best post-workout solution.

I drink a lot of milk every day and it keeps me in shape and healthy. I prefer milk to water or juice.

This is a generic statement. How does milk keep you in shape exactly? I'd be interested to know the science behind milk keeping you in shape...

I wasn't aware of this. I always thought that water was the better choice. I personally can't drink milk. My stomach doesn't agree with it. I am big on water before and after a workout. It is nice to know though. I will have to mention it to my husband so he can remember this after his workouts. Thank you for sharing this.

Water is important for hydration during and after exercise, but water will not supply the protein and carbohydrates needed for recovery after intense exercise.

Milk does supply protein and I think that's where I get my energy for exercising. Is this answer good enough for you, Shaun? Or should I go to my secret lab and perform a full analysis on milk?

I drink milk very frequently. I still and always will believe that water is the best sports drink. The body relies on water for hydration and metabolic functions. The body cannot perform these operations as efficiently with milk. Your body NEEDS water. Gatorade and Powerade use weird flavorings to sell their product. These "sports drinks" portray themselves as hydrating when you can easily obtain the same hydration from water or other food substances. Water is the best choice for me.

Wow! This is something that I'm surprised. I usually drink Gatorade or Powerade during workouts and play basketball with my friends. I usually drink milk during late nights, but I guess I'll try this out.

All that came to mind when I read this was "milk was a bad choice!"

Haha!

I just can't imagine drinking milk when I'm hot and sweaty. I feel like I'd puke.

I drink a whey shake every day after working out at the local gym. I don't know the exact science, nor do I really care. As long as what I'm doing works, I'm not going to change.

Whey protein is popular because it is the fastest absorbing protein. It still takes quite a long time to be fully assimilated, a 30g portion can take up to 4 hours to be absorbed when consumed in a fasted state.

I'm surprised milk is healthier than water. I always knew that gatorade and powerade aren't the healthiest drinks but I assumed water is the healthiest drink there is. Although, now that I think about it, fruit juice (and I mean 100% natural, like literally a freshly squeezed orange, fresh coconut milk, passion fruit juice etc) is probably healthiest.

I don't like cow milk at all, but I like coconut milk, soy milk, almond milk, and probably most other milks.

Milk has casein protein as well as whey protein - casein is slow absorbing protein and whey is fast acting protein. This is a really basic fact as to why it's better than sports drinks. Sports drinks usually have like 30g of sugar per 250mL and maybe 2g of protein. Milk though, has 10g per 250mL and 5g sugar

^all rough estimates.
