Mental Toughness

I feel like you have to really want to accomplish the task at hand or have some kind of outside motivation. If you aren't committed, then you will have a hard time performing to the best of your abilities. The mind is a powerful tool. You have to believe in what you are doing.

You just have to push the thoughts aside and push through it. It may hurt in the moment and you may not want to keep going, but in the end it's worth it. It makes you feel so much more accomplished when you know you pushed through the pain.

I have to say for me listening to music beforehand really helps. It can be hard to find the right songs but it can really get me motivated to keep going and give it my all. As I listen to the music I generally keep my mind on more aggressive thoughts, it really does make me feel far more motivated and energized to go all out, I'd assume it's the same for a lot of people.

Compartmentalize

Wen I was still a volleyball player, we really had tough trainings and tough schedule. There were times that we tend to get hurt; whether it's a physical hurt or en emotional one, we just had to keep on keeping on.

We had this "compartmentalize your focus". It's like hypnotizing yourself to momentarily shelve your problems, your hurts, whatever it is that is bothersome or hurtful. You have to set aside personal grudges as well and thing outside the box.

It's not always easy; but with practice, we learned it and I somehow carried the habit with me as I grew older.

Focus on the task at hand. When focusing more on the guy with every intention of choking you out/hurting you in a major way, pain takes a back seat.

I think whats important here is mental toughness can make the difference between a good athlete and a GREAT athlete. Not everyone has that mental toughness to see things through while the going is tough - and its the people that do that go on to great things.

I second this. It's all about the will at the end of the day. Guys who do not will it out, tend to lose a little bit of confidence in their abilities. This loss of confidence can then later affect their game in an adverse way, which just makes the goal seem even further away than before. The will then grows even weaker. It really is the spiral that is responsible for the wasted potentials of many talented athletes.

It might sound weird but when I'm struggling for the last rep or last stride I just think about if I don't complete that last rep or stride then my family is going to die. Just think as if your life is on the line. Might be pretty crazy but it does help me...

Just tell yourself to keep going cause it's just a few more minutes/hours of pain and then it's over. Do the best that you can and you'll be happier later.

This is exactly what I do, when swimming I think to myself "one more lap, just one more", it usually works. :)

Mental toughness is what sets average people apart from legendary people.
You have to endure all the pain, all that criticism, and if you work hard for it, it'll reward you for your efforts.

I agree. If you find a way to get that last bit of strength out of yourself, that makes you a great person. I usually do it by getting mad, which tends to help me a lot in lifting weights and playing football. Just push your self and you will do good things.

I didn't do this before, but I think the number one thing I can do now is....

Relax.Just take a deep breath. And relax.

Djorkovic is a good example. He somehow managed to change his mentality from a competitor to a champion. He has the mental toughness and he believes he is a champion.

You can try meditation and yoga. They help you to destress and focus on your goals. You can also try listening to subliminal messages but I don't know whether they are really effective.

Whenever I experience this, I try my best to stop my mind from thinking. I found that shutting my mind off puts my body on autopilot and it helps me push a lot further. When I shut my mind off I stop thinking about the pain and almost completely forget it. It's kind of hard to explain in words but I hope you get it. :)
