As a cross country runner, I'm forced to run through all types or weather and body aches. Because there are no substitutions or time outs in running, I have to prepare myself to run for long periods of times without complaining.

How do you guys prepare yourselves mentally for your game? When you're hurting and feel like you have nothing left into you, how do you convince yourself that you're doing this for the team?

Just tell yourself to keep going cause it's just a few more minutes/hours of pain and then it's over. Do the best that you can and you'll be happier later.

There is no such thing as can't. And I just get in the mood and bust it out.

Mind and body work together and they're both equally important. Keeping a calm and relaxed way to think helps a lot. Once you get anxious or nervous, things get out of control. I try to always stay positive.

This doesn't have to do with a sport, more like my job. I was blessed with great mental toughness. There are some people that have been through something terrible, or have had to work hard for everything in life. Some people started with nothing and then became something. Those people usually become very emotionally and mentally strong.

Not me, I've had a relatively easily life yet I was gifted with great mental toughness. I'm very lucky, and I think it's what makes me a good firefighter/paramedic. I don't break down under pressure or stress.

I generally have good willpower and mental toughness but in terms of sports or when I'm running or lifting then I usually put on some uplifting trance/house on my iPod and I just keep at it.

Always think positive and never negative. Thats how I get through most hardships and mental toughness.

Without positive thinking, you will never succeed.

Just gotta start thinking that you can do it.

This describes me very well. Except I'm not a firefighter/paramedic...yet :P
When it comes down to it, i'm able to just shut off the pain by distracting my mind, and focusing on my goal.

I think whats important here is mental toughness can make the difference between a good athlete and a GREAT athlete. Not everyone has that mental toughness to see things through while the going is tough - and its the people that do that go on to great things.

Yeah i sign that. Also, there are people with talent, and people with less talent but who are mentally so strong that they overcome a talented person. If you want to be the best, you gotta be strong in your head.

Talent can go wasted without hard work. Someone who is less talented by has the drive of a champion will always come out on top. By any chance have any of you read Talent is overrated or the talent code? Highly suggest those books. Never have seen a great to level profomer who does not have passion and drive.

I visualize myself being the best. I have one quote that always comes up to my mind:

"Are you going to say I wish I did or I'm glad I did?"

Keeps me motivated for whatever I'm doing.Really helps.

This reminds of the 2008 US Open when Tiger Woods won it on a broken leg. He had to push the pain again to focus on the game. It really was not that bad of a injury although, only a torn acl and two stress factors in his right leg.. amazing what you can do if you foruce yourself to do it.

It's all about focus and having the resolve to claw your way back into the game. I remember playing a tennis game where I was down 2 sets to love but I didn't give up on my ability to come back. I eventually came back to win :D

For me personally, I gave never had a problem with motivation. When it is difficult and I am struggling, I use my bank of past experience to help get me through.

Meditate a lot, this builds up your mental powers. And try doing things in your everyday life that "work out" your willpower, like resisting sweets, getting up early, etc etc.

Baseball is all about mental toughness. You need to forget and move on otherwise it will affect your play the rest of the game. Its a fact.
