I'm 44 and I have never worn makeup on a regular basis. I am visiting more clients for work and would like to have a more professional, polished look. As you can see from the photo at left, I could use a tremendous amount of help, maybe a belt sander?!? Anyway, I think Sephora offers makeup instruction for $125 that you can use for their products. I know this topic has been mentioned for teens but was wondering with all you beauties out there if there is a direction I should go at my advanced age.

I think you look pretty nice!

:shesaid:

Darn, you are in KY. Our Mrsred is in Gurnee, IL and I am sure she could have done something for you for less than $125!!

No advice...but go for it! I am 43 and never ever wear makeup either. When my daughter would ask for advice I felt like a makeup dummy...cause I don't know!! Good for you to get some help if you need it!

Thanks Barb!!

Is there something specifically you have Qs about? What do you currently do and how much time do you have for makeup? What's your skin tone and eye color?

I don't wear makeup either! Never have...I didn't want to be one of those people who forget to put it on for a day and then everyone asks if I'm tired/ sick. I'm low maintenence with a capital L!!
Definitely into clothes, though...

Sounds like we need lessons via Skype...

Blue eyes (apparently best feature, people always mention them), light skin with some dark spots left from pregnancy mask EIGHT YEARS! ago. Not sure how the color thing works but I look better in pinks, blues, purples than in orange, yellow, etc. The only makeup I own is what we use for DD's yearly dance recital. I bounce from cleansers and moisturizers, when I use them. Would like a natural look with more dressed up options. Just never learned about the basics. Mom is a Maybelline Classic Ivory Liquid, draw on some brows, little lipstick and out the door lady.

Would love to go with the penis hat look, but I don't think that would fly in a room full of folks enrolling in their Flexible Spending Account...

I went to a salon that sold makeup and had them apply it and talk to me about my skin.
At the salon, they went through the whole skin care thing, not just putting on the makeup. They were having a special, $25 for a 30 minute facial and makeup application! You can't beat that.

So it depends on what you are looking for. A department store will put stuff on you for free and you are not obligated to buy anything. I'm sure Sephora does a nice job for that money. Can you ask around and find out where people get their makeup? Maybe splurge on a facial to find out about your skin care needs and then go somewhere for makeup?

I'm no expert, I just know what worked for me. Good luck!

I remember when my mother was about 45 she decided she wanted to wear makeup. She never had done, at all. I think, very true to form for her, she read a book about it, had her colors done (it was the eighties), and had one of my sisters help her with the actual application techniques. Then she got her ears pierced. The entire transformation (and it was a huge difference) took about 3 days--although I think she had actually "researched" it for a while before. In retrospect we looked back at that weekend as "Mom's midlife crisis"--but true to form it was well planned out, orderly, efficient and really remarkably succesful. God, I miss her...

I was going to go with your smile/attitude....beautiful!

I learned make up techniques especially eye make up and face contouring from YouTube :giggles: Check it and see, there's plenty of make up gurus there whose style you might like.

One useful tip I got there is using Urban decay eyeshadow primer (UDPP). its da bomb if you want your eyeshadow to stay fresh longer with no creasing nor fading. Another trick that works well for me is dabbing MoM (Philips milk of magnesia (original formula) ~ check your stash, most couponers have lots of those from past drugstore MM deals) after putting on sunblock. Just make sure not to put too much or your face will be chalky white  If you master putting on just enough, your face will be dewy moist, not oily.

Stacy London from What Not To Wear wrote a book about style. I saw it at Barnes and Noble the other day. Just go to the book store grab a seat and read it.

I am with boyzrus with going to a department store.

I used to do that all the time. It gives you an opportunity to try expensive products and have a free makeup lesson. And if you hate the way they did your makeup, try another makeup product line.

It has been awhile, but usually Lacome, etc have promotions where you spend X amount of dollars you get a ffree little makeup kit. This promotion changes from store to store.
