Kids..........."mixers" at your house?

Now that DS is 13 (he's all about talking about how he's a teenager now), I'm wondering if peeps let their kids throw parties or "mixers" to socialize with friends (boys and girls) from their school? To be clear, DS hasn't asked for that and prolly wouldn't, but I thought it would be fun.

We have a finished basement with game systems, foosball table, kitchen, bathroom, etc. I thought it would be fun during the winter to have a lil get together with about 20 or so kids for a couple of hours.

Would you do this?
 
YES, I would. I prefer anything at MY house. I am in control (LOL!)

I think it is GREAT if your child wants it and has friends to invite.

20 kids is a lot IMO.... we have a pool party which DD calls her End Of Summer party (only girls, she is 9.) I cannot imagine 20 kids!
 
I would keep it to 12 and guys only.

Unless you plan to stay down there the whole time

AND as a mom of girls, I don't know too many moms of girls that would allow their 13 year old over to a boy's house.

Although, your situation is different than mine....if they are girls from his class/group that have all known each other since forever the moms may feel more comfortable.

AND....13 yo boys break stuff. I think 20 is WAY too many to expect NOT to have a broken game system etc...or something damaged.
 
I would start with having like 5 or 6 boys over for a Friday night ..cheap pizzas and pop.play some video games or watch some movies.then progress from there :) your house sounds perfect for gathering
 
You're right.............20 does seem like a lot. My thinking was that there's 20 kids total in his class so we would invite the whole class, but I'm sure several wouldn't come (most of the kids are in all kinds of activities and yeah, prolly several of the girl's parents wouldn't be on board).

It would be totally supervised (from a "cool" distance) of course.

Last year DS struggled a little socially for the first time ever. This year things seem to be much better so I just wanted to keep the momentum going KWIM?

I was thinking a couple hours of music, foosball, video games, food, etc. would make for a good time to be talked about at school. (No, I am not beyond buying popularity lol).
 
I would and I have!!! There is a reason I have invested in air hockey, foos-ball, darts, pool table, slots and poker tables. Just be prepared when everyone gets their drivers license YOU BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME and then another and another both boys and girls. But I know where my kids are even at 17yrs old.

You're right..............I should prolly start with just boys................BUT there's never been a boy/ girl mixer within this group so I think it would either be a huge hit (hoping) or a flop meaning only boys would show which would still be fun.

Oh I forgot, we have a dartboard down there too! :bliss:

Oh and we will be getting air hockey and pool tables eventually.............I love those games!!!
 
mrsmom too bad you didn't think of it earlier..a Halloween party is always fun..or have a super bowl party. even girls would come if they knew boys were there

Oh a Super Bowl party is a great idea (if the Pack goes all the way)..........half of DS's class (or more) are Packer fans.

A Halloween party is also a great idea. When I was in 7th grade, a pair of popular twin boys had a huge Halloween party at their house.............it was a blast!!!

Yes, I would have a bunch of kids over. I would consider the space you have, what you have for entertainment, and your tolerance for it all in considering how many at a time, but like you said, they probably won't all come. We have a pool table and an air hockey table (probably electronic darts too) in our garage (attached), but it's covered in sh................t.....I mean stockpile. We used to let our older boys have friends over to play like that. Now my ds is going to be 13 and we need to figure out how to uncover the tables so they can get used again.

Going on the 3rd generation for this type of thing...I started going to boy/girl house parties when I was in 6th grade...my father would walk me there, and walk me home (we had no car)...DS son (now 33) hosted parties for his entire class (25 kids) on our whole 1st floor (I stayed upstairs within hearing/spying distance & DH hung out in the garage)...DGS (7th grade) has requested holding one @ his dad's for the weekend before Valentine's Day...probably the town kids his age plus some classmates from middle school...never had a problem...other than the Lutheran minister's daughter in DS's class showing up in sweats, asking to use the bathroom, & coming out looking like Jodi Foster in "Taxi Driver"....
 
For us, we have invited entire class for birthday parties but we did do them elsewhere. This year, DD is going to have her first sleepover and with her there will be 7 girls. On a frequent basis she will have 3 other friends over for 3 hours and we order them pizza, they play, do karoke, etc. We had one playdate this week and the 4 girls had such a great time they asked if they could come again the next day. I said sure - rather than come for lunch they came in the afternoon and made cake pops and played again. I find that a small group of close friends is what my DD prefers and allows her and the girls to develop closer friendships.

Whatever you decide - I bet your son and his friends will have a blast.
