SERIOUS :) question

how can someone who hasnt ever worked, just collects gov't aid get a refund??

My niece at 19 got pregnant, ( she is now 20) had the baby no baby daddy in the picture , lives with her loser dad and his loser family. She has never worked a job in her life --so all over FB she is posting about getting a refund and being able to buy herself clothes and new glasses

I thought you needed income to get the earned income credit. My low point in doing our taxes this year was that we qualified for this for the first time ever this year. (:

Yeah she needs qualifying income, could she maybe be scamming? Sometimes people with kids to claim for EITC will pretend to have a "business" and report some income from the fake business. The EITC which is sort of a welfare program meant to encourage people to work, that would pay out much more than any tax she might owe.

She could "claim" she earned say 9,000 in her "business" pay a tiny bit of self-employment tax and walk away with a few thousand dollars.

I actually know of people that claimed self-employment to get EITC and eventually got caught :)

okay how about if she is living with her loser dad--who does work--she is 20 not in school, but has the baby--can her dad get the credit for the baby??-Maybe he got the money and gave it to her

That could be how she is getting it. The baby lives with her as well? He is working, she agrees to let him claim the baby on his return in exchange for some of the money when he gets the payment. Technically him claiming the child would likely be legal. I've seen even worse, people literally trying to trade kids "on paper" among relatives the kids did not even live with (big no no) depending on who had income at the "right level".

funny she ( they ) cant pass basic high school classes but they know how to work the income tax game

wow

just wow

and for the record I begged her to give the baby up for adoption rather then mooch off the government to support it

Reminds me of a story my sister told me. She works for a University program that helps students get their GED. (Don't know details but you get the jist). A student said to her that he was going to be rich someday because he was going to marry a woman with lots of babies and she is going to get her check. Kathy hit it right on the nose.

a woman that works with dh is married but she kept her name--and had 4 babies--she got some nice $$ link $$ as well as other aid--she also had a killer wardrobe
