How young can I start my child on a dirt bike?

I see four year olds on bikes at the local hill climb every year. I am wondering how young can I start my child riding? She has such an interest in all things like dirt bikes and four wheelers and she is only two! I would love to get her on one and trained properly as soon as possible.

I guess it depends on the maturity and size of the child. Obviously if the child is 6'2 at age 5 then they are good to go, but if they are smaller you have to use caution. In terms of laws, I am not aware of any that say anything specific unless there is a department of natural resources law that I am not aware of. The biggest issue is if someone calls in Child Protective Services and then you will undergo an investigation but it would likely result in nothing. Good Luck!
 
I would try to talk with the parents of the four year olds that you are watching climb the local hills to find out how young they started and if they have any tips for you. It sounds like she has a real interest but at a very young age, their interests can change quickly. I would try not to invest too much money (or get your hopes up too much) until you see how things progress for her.

Definitely on the right track here. Young children tend to become fascinated with things quite easily and all of a sudden, they dislike it or don't want to do something. Age, size and maturity all tie in together to factor how safe it is to ride and how young children can start. I would definitely ask around at local tracks or meets and see how young they all started or how young their kids started.
 
Depends on how big the kid is and how mature. As another poster said try using those minibikes but I would recommend any kid under the age of 5 or 6 isn't a terribly good idea to let him control anything that uses an engine.
 
Wait until he is 6 or 7 years old. Obviously if he is tall then he can start sooner but make sure he is able to drive the bike comfortably and manage the speed and balance properly.
 
I would wait until 6 or 7 too. 4 just sounds too young! Those parents are insane. I bet that kid isn't wearing the right gear too. I would never put my child at risk like that, but a lot of my cousins have started out around 7 and went on to compete into their teens.
 
I think you yourself as a parent can know the ability of your child. You may ask a sports coach to assess of her readiness level. Being two years old is quite early but who knows the potential of every person?

Hey JenVarsity- what about starting with a PowerWheels first? They make both 4 wheeler and motorcycle types. There is little kid who lives near us that always rides his dirtbike around the house. He doesn't look much bigger than my daughter (who just turned 5). Two is probably a little young for a real one as they don't have the coordination to control it, but something that goes only 1 or 2 speeds might work great!
 
I would also say around 7. I know a few neighborhood families that have kids that do ride dirt bikes. One of the kids started at 5 and the other at 6. When i talked to the parents on a local party they told they also wanted to start earlier but they were advised not to.
