Acknowledging that many divorcing couples suffer guilt and anguish over the end of the marriage, a bishop in Hanover, Germany says it's time the church stepped in to help people better deal with the pain of divorce. Margot Kaessmann, a bishop for the German Protestant church, suggested today that churches introduce a special religious "end-of-marriage" ceremony. "A lot of people have problems of conscience after divorce. A separation ceremony would help them and their children cope with it," she told the German daily newspaper Bild. Kaessmann suggested the whole family would meet in church to renounce the marriage vows. "I think marriage is a wonderful thing. But I think it's important that we can also tell God when we've failed," she said.

Loyalty and love are the best things of all, and surely the most lasting. -- My Dog Skip
Celebrant: "Do you, Bob, hate Susan for all time? Will you smite her with thy hand, rebuke her with language most foul, and hate until Hell freezeth over?"
Bob (glaringly): "I do."
Celebrant: "And do you, Susan, promise to take all of Bob's worth and possessions...leaving him for poor, for death, for sickness, and for prison if he refuses to pay?"
Susan (eagerly): "I do."
Celebrant: "I pronounce thee ex-husband and ex-wife. You may now slap each other."
