Not to take away attention from any of the stimulating threads that are thriving....I'd like to make a fruit crisp and would like any suggestions or how-to's. Yes, I'll be googling a recipe, but figured if anyone has any tried and true recipes to share, they'd be much appreciated. I have a container of quick oats that I'd like to use. Apples are very cheap so I'm thinking apple crisp but I'm open to other ideas (or what types of apples work best.)

Keep in mind - I'm not a fancy cook and usually bake from mixes. :bowing:

My boys are BIG cobbler and crisp fans... me, not so much.... i have a tried and true recipe ... let me find it for you

Here it is..... I don't think I've made it with apples yet.... oh and I always make 2X the crumble amount..... they  the crumble!

Don't laugh too hard....anything I can substitute for cornstarch?

Thanks for the recipe - it looks simple enough. I love granny smith apples so I think I may try it with them.

Cornstarch substitutes
For each 1 tablespoon of cornstarch needed use: 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
OR
1 tablespoon potato flour or rice flour
OR
4 teaspoons quick-cooking tapioca
OR
2 teaspoons arrowroot

Ok, I have the all purpose flour.

Arrowroot???? :surrender:

I used to make a simple one using Jiffy Cake Mix & canned filling...put the filling in a pan, dump the cake mix on top, dot with pats of butter or oly...bake @ 325/350 until it looks done...haven't made it in years...used to use chocolate with cherry filling for a Black Foresty kind of cake...yellow with apple filling...white with peach or blueberry...I'm just guessing @ the temps...

Here is a super easy one for apple crisp. I've made this so many times and always get compliments. We go apple picking at the end of every summer and I make this for us, family and friends and will make it at least 10 times+ each year. Tastes extra yummy with some French Vanilla or Butter Pecan ice cream. on top

4 cups sliced apples
1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tbsp water
1/2 c. white sugar
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. butter
3/4 c. flour
1/4 c. quick oats

Preheat oven to 350. Toss apples with 1 tsp. cinnamon and place in 8x8 greased pan. Pour water over apples. Cream together sugar and butter. Blend in flour and add remaining cinnamon and oats. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Bake uncovered at 350 for 20 minutes. Increase temp to 375 or 400 and bake an additional 20 minutes until the top is nice and brown.

This is not a recipe, but near the Marzetta caramel deal I saw little containers that you add apples to and it is an apple crisp. It is easy and Marzetta is sooooooooo good.

Joanmarie,

Did you make this yet? Did you like it??

Not yet. I have to get to the farmers market first to pick up some apples. I'll probably make this over the weekend.

I made up some brownies over the weekend that will get us through. :giggles:

This was really tasty! I kind of made a combination of the recipes Mary and luvagreat deal posted. I added some raisins and tossed the apples in cinnamon sugar. I used Granny Smith apples since they're my favorite but I was a little concerned it would be too tart. Not a problem at all. I was almost tempted to have some of if for breakfast since it's mostly fruit & oatmeal but I remembered all the brown sugar that went into it and ended up going with toast and some leftover bacon instead.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, I'll definitely be making this again.

:faint:

you're killing me, joan! ...in a really nice, love you lots, kinda way, of course! :huggy:

What can I tell you, I'm more of a toss this and that together and see how things turn out kind of cook. Works great with pasta dishes, not so great with cakes. :giggles:
