Kansas State coach Frank Martin, who spent seven years at the helm of three high school teams in the 1990s before joining Northeastern University as an assistant coach, says he regularly paid collegiate players who had played for him in high school when they had nowhere else to turn.

Martin, speaking during Sunday's broadcast of the NCAA tournament on CBS, for which he was working as an analyst, seemed to be making a case for better compensating collegiate players in need as he defended Kansas State senior Jamar Samuels, who was held out of the Wildcats' final game because of an eligibility concern.

"I coached 16 years in the same inner city in Miami that I grew up in. Do you know how much money I sent to kids that played for me in high school when they were in college because I knew where they came from?" Martin said, according to a transcript of the broadcast published by the Kansas City Star. "I knew they didn't have a father figure."

I think college players should get paid. They bring in a ton of revenue for the school and get nothing for it. They are not even allowed to have a job, so what does the NCAA expect. These kids should at least get $200-300 a month so they can have some spending money.

They definitely should be compensated something for the amount of money they bring in for their schools. It's kind of hard just to live off a scholarship with no other income coming in, especially if your parents are in a tough financial situation themselves which is often the case.

I can understand college players needing money.

But hell, they're paid in education and free room and board. It's not like tuition is cheap. I can understand needing money as a college kid, I was one. But the fact that they don't have to pay for their schooling and dorm says a lot.

They get an education that's worth tens of thousands of dollars. Or at least those who choose to use it. Yeah, its tough being broke in college. But its not like they're the only ones. Most college kids are broke and struggling. As far as a job goes, their job is to study and go to practice.
I have a problem with coaches being paid millions of dollars. That salary comes from tuition fees, which seem to be hiked up every year.

Exactly, hell, if I had someone playing my education and board when I was in school, I'd have been happy. I would have found myself some small time crap job for pocket money and finished out school that way.

The kids who need the extra money for real, should have some sort of program set up so they can get the help. They need to rewrite the NCAA rule book to consider this. Filter who gives the money if you have to. Just help these kids who are struggling.

But they are struggling just as the rest of the college kids are. In fact, they have an advantage because their books, school, and board are paid for via scholarships. Which most of the kids don't have since they're paying for that stuff on their own with the little financial aid they get. So why should they get payment of such over say the rest of the kids just because they're athletes?

Because what they do brings in revenue for the school. If debate teams were bringing in millions of dollars every year I would think they should get paid too. A lot of these athletes have poor families and are getting into schools, because of their talent, that their family couldn't have afforded anyway. I bet most of them wouldn't have went to college if they didn't get a scholarship. And students on athletic scholarships are not allowed to have a job. So what is a kid supossed to do on campus with all of his friends, but no money to go out and get some food with them or see a movie? It's just not fair the way the system is set up right now.

College players should get paid. If some get paid, then they need to set a strict rule as to how much they get paid and by who. With all the work they do, the athletes deserve a little bit on extra cash. It seems as if half of the athletes are already getting paid, so why not just pay them all.
