feeling so discouraged with all the insurance claims

We finally had the insurance adjuster come, what she is allowing us is so low.
I don't know how we will be able to get everything done.
She told us she would allow for the roof--but then took off depreciation, same with the shed and the weather machine etc,
It is sad, because how can I get a new shed and new roof for only 4000?
My dh can and will do the work, but the roofing supplies have gone off the roof-because of asphalt prices--so for us just to buy supplies for our roof--it is 3,000--that is without the dumpster that is 400 plus the 1,000 deposit required for the dumpster
The shed is 750 and doesn't offer installation--if we get it installed it costs 2,500--but they don't make our size in the size they would install. Yes, DH will do the work--but she told us she would pay us his labor costs--the same as it would cost to have them come and install it--
the machine my dh uses to track the weather etc--is over 1,000----
We need all the items--we need a shed for all the lawn stuff--we need a new roof-as it is very damaged
I am so frustrated---so sick and tired of dealing with insurance---
My son looked through everything--and figured out where she got her totals--but I think she is way off base.
So--now unsure what to do!!
Just feeling very discouraged!!
 
I am so sorry! I remember that you have State Farm insurance. My parents had State Farm years ago. They traveled a lot & I took care of their house while they were not there. I usually looked around the first floor and looked down to the basement. If everything looked okay, I left. I didn't even realize that the finished basement was flooded. By the time I found out, damage was done. I called their State Farm agent. The agent gave me a restoration company's number to call. I called and someone came out. The person from the restoration company did all the work. Whenever the restoration company found more stuffs needed to be fixed, the restoration company would contact State Farm to iron out all the detail. In the end, the basement was fully restored & my parents only had to pay the deductible.

If I were you, I would talk to your agent. I don't know whether it is possible to get a State Farm approved restoration company to do all the work. Let the restoration company deals with State Farm. Good luck!
 
Yes, we do have state farm. I am just feeling so overwhelmed.
DH has planned all the work etc--but with this amount there is no way it can be done.
I want him to go and get estimates on the roof--how much professional roofers would charge--even for just a repair job not a full job--to see what they say
For the shed--the next one up that they will install is 2.500 that is a huge difference
The adjustor did say go get an estimate on how much an electrician would charge as we had electric in our shed,
this doesn't even include the lap tops, and the other stuff
We have a pod out front that they are covering for one month--we have already had it for 2 weeks--it will take us at least a week to get a permit for the shed to get rid of the pod---and then longer to build the shed--this is just ridiculous
I am so overwhelmed
Also--they only gave me 400 for food allowance for the inside fridge and freezer and our chest freezer--she asked for details on teh outside freezer--and amount so we said 400--she took that as the inside too--we gave her complete pictures of the inside--which is alot more than 400---so there is no way I can replace EVERYTHING-for that amount-even with coupons.

Don't you have replacement cost for your house? Why won't State Farm fix everything for you? You should only have to pay the deductible.
 
Here is how catastrophic claims work (we had a hail claim for our siding, AND we have State Farm).

They come out, inspect. They have a multiplier based on the square footage (actually for roofing the measurement is called "squares") x the current price. Say the total to replace the roof is $10K.

They will minus the deductible (ours is $1000), so now $9k. Then they will hold the depreciation (percentage based on age of the house) until after the repairs are completed. So, if they hold 40 pct because your roof is 15 years old, then you will get a check for $5000 ($10000 - $1000 deductible - $4000 for depreciation, depreciation is figured before the deductible is taken off). After repairs are completed, they will pay out the remainder of the amount held for depreciation, after they have come to inspect that the repairs were actually done.

If you feel she is low-balling you on the claim amount, call a local roofing company and have them out for a quote. Then you will know what typical charges would be for materials + labor and you can use that quote to negotiate the correct amount of money for your claim.
 
Kathy we had our roof redone last year as a result of storm damage. My DH considered doing it himself (he's handy enough to do so) but you have to take into consideration time, weather, getting a dumpster, tools, extra help, etc. And do you need plywood replaced? Or just reshingled? That's another cost. A roofing company can have it done it a day and done right:-) We used A. Abel Roofing (708) 646-3656. They were super nice, honest guys that run this business. I would highly recommend them.
 
I'm sorry KM, I also agree w/a loss company...when we had our house fire the loss company dealt with allstate and we got a lot more for our loss than allstate would have paid. Also, after this is all said and done I recommend switching to Farmers. I just did and am now saving money on my house insurance again!

do you mean they take off for how old the roof is, or the actual age of the house?

No problems with us, but we just got a new roof I would assume if something happened it would be based on the new roof age, right?
 
New roof age. And you get the depreciation back when you actually perform the repairs.

It does matter if your "new roof" was put on over the old one, or if they tore off the old one.

We will get a depreciation check for 2,000--so allowing us 6,000 to fix the roof.
We have a friend that was a union roofer come over and tell us what we needed--he can not do the roof as he is retired or on disability from the union and he would lose his pension-but he can come as a friend and consult--just can not take any money--he told us to buy the supplies needed--he went to home depot and Menards--it is almost 3,000---we then have to have a dumpster come--our neighbor will try and get us a deal-but it is a minimum of 375---then we have to pay a deposit to the county of 1,000 for the dumpster to make sure we do not hurt the water lines---this will come back once the dumpster is removed--
That is without doing the shed--which we are going to have to go back to her and ask for more money. The money she is alotting we can not get it done for

I did say to dh=--why not just let roofers do it and be done--but his reasons for doing it himself made sense--until we saw how little the check was
Orginally, he would use the extra money-to do some other much needed repairs on the house--that we have had to put off---our floor in our garage is caved in--and we need major concrete work done--same with our back porch--so we could rent a machine and pour new concrete
We also have a bow window--it does not open and we lose so much heat and air through it--because it is so old--but bow windows are outrageous--because this is an abnormal size---so we were going to try and see if we could get that replaced because in the long run it would save us a lot of money
We also found out when we had the tree taken off the shed (from the storm) that we have 5 ashes that should come down due to the ash borer---2 are very dangerous right now--the other 3 they said we might have 2 years if we are lucky--we had 3 different tree people come out--and didn't tell them what the others said--they all showed us why they believe we have the disease--one gave us a number to call to try and save the trees--but it is MORE and I mean way MORE to try and save the trees than to take them down.
We were hoping if they gave us 10,000 for the roof (the estimate we got from another roofing company) that we could use that extra 6,000 to do some of those repairs.
The insurance lady is allowing for shingles--even though we have to replace the boards etc (our roof already has 2 layers so we have to do a complete tear off--we have lived here 17 years and have never replaced the roof--just patches--Rich did show her the damage from the winter with the soffit and facia--another thing he wants to fix--and she didn't count that--as that was from a different storm--he was hoping she could write it into the estimate--can't argue that one--because it was from a different storm0

I still have to call about the food--I really don't care about the outside freezer--when she asked what was in there we guessed about 400.00---we had pictures for our fridge and freezer in the house--and we did not know when she asked for food loss that we were telling her for both--we thought she only wanted what was in the outside--so now I have to ask her if she could adjust--we threw out EVERYTHING--and there is no way I could replace the stuff we lost--even with couponing--we had lobster that was a gift, we had speciality desserts, things that were gifts-that were from specialty stores that I can't replace---
Oh well---that is minor-now off to get computer estimates---having them replace similar value (we have an extra rider to protect them and replacement value on all home items) my sons Sony--they don't make any more--they might have the same cpu--but not with all the bells and whistles--so we have to go to Sony (where we bought it) and ask them what is comparable to it--have them give us an estimate and send it off--same with the other 2 lap tops--though one is really old--it worked great--and my dd is 4 years old--but it worked great--so the allowance for them was little--but we can't replace it at the same value.
Also-the shed--to have them build it ---she is allowing 749 for the shed--then an additional 200 for electric and a roof---and then we are to find out how much labor is and she will adjust it--they don't build the shed she showed us--we would have to--so they can't give us a labor deal--the next shed that is similar is 2,200 that is a HUGE difference--so we have to see if they will adjust the claim.
Also, have to ask them to pay for the pod for another month--as it took them so long to get out here for the estimate--it will take a week for us to get the permit--(unincorporated areas take longer) so we can't get moving on the project---kind of mad because dh is off this week-and he would have had it built--but because of the county we can't

Comed does not pay for spoiled food anymore, her homeowner insurance does.

Kathy, call the 800-number (it is on your estimate paperwork) and tell them to send another adjuster. They don't just pay to replace the shingles, etc. I assume you had water intrusion into your home?

If the roof is a loss, they pay for everything related to fix the loss, including the sheeting/wood, including the drywall and paint inside, including cleaning up the inside, etc.

If you have "replacement value" insurance, they must "replace" it with a comparable or better model (the computers). When our neighbors house flooded our downstairs (duplex), State Farm had a whole other department that replaced my printers, computer CPU, monitor, etc. They mailed me the actual equipment, not a check for the $. They looked up in their little database what was comparable and shipped me the actual items. No cost to me.

You have up to 2 years to ADD items to your claim. It is not too late to itemize your food losses, or any other tools/equipment that you lost. 2 YEARS.

This woman you are dealing with has got to go. Call your agent and voice your displeasure, then call the 800-number and tell them you need a different, COMPETENT adjuster like yesterday.

You have to be your own best advocate. Insurance will pay to replace everything you lost. Your premium will or won't go up anyway because of the claim, no reason to sell yourself short on your losses!

We are saving $$ on our monthly premuims...however, they do not like to approve claims. So we are not getting a new roof, siding, etc like all of our neighbors. HMMM...we all experienced the same storm and similar damage. Go figure. They told me our 6 year old roof that was allowing water to run into our house was suffering from homeowner neglect and a was standard maintence issue. Really??
