Anyone knows of a good place near Crystal lake to take my 5 yr old for an eye exam??? I am hoping to take her this morning. She has been complaining. We don't have vision insurance so any reasonable place would be great.

Do you have health insurance for her? I think at that age if you get a referral from her pediatrician you can see a pediatric eye dr and it will be covered. If she needs glasses those would not be covered, but the actual exam should be. At that age I would recommend a pediatric eye dr versus using an eye dr at a discount glasses place. My kids go to Dr Thompson at Medical Eye Services in Gurnee. We love her!

Honestly, NEVER had any problems with walmart or any of the other in store optical centers. You could also try visionworks but I prefer walmart over them. Good luck.

I would go to Walmart. That is where I took my foster kids because they accept the state insurance. They have kids frames that start at $9.00. Basic lenses are $28, I think. I'm not sure how much the exam is, but you could call & ask. I would totally buy $9.00 frames for a 5yo because they could lose them pretty easily. After the initial exam, it would be just about $40 to replace them.

If you have health insurance your best bet would be to make an appointment with an Ophthalmologist. An Ophthalmologist is actually an MD who specializes in eye problems. An optometrist on the other hand is NOT an MD and as such would not be covered under your health insurance. I had serious eye problems as a child and I thank GOD my parents had the foresight to get me the proper treatment. My mother did take me to several optometrists and all they wanted to do is prescribe glasses (none of them suggested an Ophthalmologist). I did need glasses but had more serious problems than just glasses could correct.

I have no problem with getting glasses at Walmart or Visionworks on anything like that. At 5 a child can't really explain what the problem is and you want to get the best care possible. An eye dr will give you a prescription that you can take anywhere.

Costco has a great eye department and you don't have to be a member to see the eye doctor. However, if she needs glasses then you need to have a membership to actually buy a pair of glasses. Good luck.
