DS had a reaction to skeeter bites.

our oldest ds has a fatal allergy and several severe allergies. he has seen a well-respected specialist since he was a baby. i remember once he said that ANY reaction to an insect bite is a sign of an allergy to it. and, as most people itch and get some sort of bump from mosq bites, they are all allergic reactions. but, like anything else, some peeps can be highly allergic to them, aka bee stings, etc etc. benedryl administered early is key, accdg to him. so, might want to keep this in mind for future. both the cream and oral will help. he may outgrow his high sensitivity to them, but may not. i am highly allergic to spider bites, myself. but, not much happens to me when i get a bee sting. my mom is highly allergic to bee stings. go figure...

Anyone who has severe allergies, whether to insect bites/stings, food, or drugs should always carry an Epi-pen. Benadryl takes too long to take effect in these cases, an Epi-pen can save your life.

my post might have been misleading. i was only referring to my son's fatal and severe allergies to give weight to his specialists remarks.

absolutely, any degree of anaphyalxis reaction warrants an epi pen and likely a visit to an ER...been there, done that, more times than i care to remember.

but, the OP's ds doesnt sound like anything close to that severity. based on the post and the dr's advice for the benedryl, it's likely the path of least resistance and the best choice, imo

PSA:

PLEASE remember that mosquitos carry diseases (such as encephalitis) which can be fatal. Keep an eye on your children's bites and watch out for symptoms. Even in this day and age it is possible to end up with something worse than a little itchy rash. Wear the appropriate repellent, cover your arms and legs in the woods etc.
