DS12 was outside playing in the dark with kids Sat. night and got all bit up. The next day we went to the beach and his back got sun burned (not bad though). The skeeter bites didn't itch him at all until he got up this morning and was miserable. He was beside himself for over an hour with itching and pain from scratching because he was also burned. I tried all kinds of things but he was crying and screaming for help because nothing was working.

I ended up taking him to quick care. The nurse said he was having a reaction likely from a mix of so many bites and sun burned on top of it. She prescribed steroids and told me to get Benadryl cream and oral Benadryl. After a few hours of being miserable, he finally has some relief.

I find it odd that he didn't start itching until a few days later. :dunce:

Oh, but the good part is that the scrip only cost me $1.53 with my insurance!:dance:
 
Aww, hope he feels better soon. DS2 has terrible reactions to bites. He hasn't been bitten this year yet, fingers crossed maybe he won't react so bad this year.
 
Hope he's feeling better soon. Use a sunscreen with DEET.

I HATE mosquitoes, they love me. Every single bite swells up & stays that way for days. I can be indoors, in a crowded room, yet I'm the only person who gets bit. It's one of 2 things I hate about living in a wooded area near wetlands, too many skeeters & no see ums.
 
I noticed that too with the bites that I have gotten. They don't start itching for a few days. No sunburn on them so maybe that is the difference. Hope he is feeling better soon.

The Benadryl makes him crabbier than ****! He had a HORRIBLE outburst today, it was ugly. I even got the dye free kind. :surrender:
 
That sucks mrs.mom, hope they go away soon. We use hydrocortisone cream on mosquito bites and that helps a little. I swell up and itch for days too...i am always COVERED in bug spray to avoid bites as much as possible.
 
mrsmom, I hope your DS feels better soon. It sounds like he is miserable. I hate skeeters, they are such meanies. My DD has crazy reactions to skeeter bites too. Twice now when she has gotten bitten on her forehead, one of her eyes completely swells up and is closed for days. The swelling gets to be about the circumference of a baseball. If I recall, the pediatrician puts her on antibiotics and steriods. Anyway, I feel your sons pain. Hope he can get a good nights sleep tonight and feels better tomorrow.

It's not the benadryl making him crabby, it's the oral steroids. They are necessary but the temporary side effects can be a ****.
 
Looks like the CDC doesn't recommend combo sunscreen & insect repellent on kids:

A. Yes. People can, and should, use both a sunscreen and an insect repellent when they are outdoors. Follow the instructions on the package for proper application of each product. In general, the recommendation is to apply sunscreen first, followed by repellent.

It is recommended NOT to use a single product that combines insect repellent containing DEET and sunscreen, because the instructions for use of insect repellents and use of sunscreen are different. In most situations, insect repellent does not need to be reapplied as frequently as sunscreen. While no recommendations are available at this time regarding products that combine other active ingredients and sunscreen, it is important to always follow the label on whatever product you are using.

Dd13 can NOT wear sunblock bug spray combo. It's one or the other. Her mosquito bites turn out to be the size of quarters at least! It's awful.

Thanks babe! I was talking to my Mom early tonight and she said (before I told her) that steroids might make him crabby!

our oldest ds has a fatal allergy and several severe allergies. he has seen a well-respected specialist since he was a baby. i remember once he said that ANY reaction to an insect bite is a sign of an allergy to it. and, as most people itch and get some sort of bump from mosq bites, they are all allergic reactions. but, like anything else, some peeps can be highly allergic to them, aka bee stings, etc etc. benedryl administered early is key, accdg to him. so, might want to keep this in mind for future. both the cream and oral will help. he may outgrow his high sensitivity to them, but may not. i am highly allergic to spider bites, myself. but, not much happens to me when i get a bee sting. my mom is highly allergic to bee stings. go figure...
