Apple is warning Apple users of a hoax where ads have been telling people to set their IPhone date to 1st Jan 1970 for a retro theme.

What actually happens is when your IPhone runs out if charging or you turn it off, it won't reboot again.

It doesn't change your iPhone, it breaks it for you.

If he wasn't my brother, I wouldn't have actually told him but then again that would be quite harsh whether he was my brother or not.
 
Wait, your phone is destroyed, as in it ceases to function ever again? By altering the time settings?

But... How?

I didn't even know that phones let you set the time that far into the past...

Yeah. It's the start of Unix time, and apparently setting the time to zero will brick your device.
 
The shocking thing is that this doesn't surprise me in how it works- likely because it makes me think of Y2K and the insanity it caused at one time. I wasn't very old mind you, but...My father worked with computers, and often tells me stories of how big a deal it was to a lot of people. It caused a lot of information issues with devices/computers at the time when you had to change the date to 2000, because it only used the last two digits or something.
