I'm thinking about running cross country next season. Any tips or ways to get started that you would like to tell me? I think I could run a decent 5k right now If I wanted to. So, any tips?
 
I run Cross Country and Track and I must say, out of the two, Cross Country is most enjoyable. The brotherhood and bond that's created is unbeatable. I think being with my team is probably the best perk! The friendships that grow from running with one another is fun. Aside from the social aspect, it teaches one discipline. In order to excel in the sport, you have to run. For me, running is a task! If I'm doing it with teammates, it's the easiest, most fun thing ever, but to have to drag myself out the house on a Sunday is very hard. You have to be a strong willed, determined person. Finally, you have to want to do it! Unlike other sports where you can have a time out or substitution, in Cross Country, you run your whole 100-5,000 meters without stopping.

What is your training regimen at this point? Have you spoke with the cross country coach?
 
Dang bro, pick a different sport such as hockey or baseball. To be honest, sports like track/cross country/swimming are cults. They all hang out with eachother and if you dont play their sport they dont want anything to do with you. Serious.

How can you make those false accusations? If you want to be up front, all sports are that way. Has that ever happened to you?

That is not true... my best friend has been doing cross country and now I'm fixing to join.
 
I used to do the cross country workouts with my buddy to get ready for soccer season and, ****.

Run, run, run, run, run...and then run more. That's how you prep for cross country. Run in terrain though. Go in the woods and run up some hills, on the beach, etc. Get your body used to different environments. And end every workout with a set of sprints, but never stop jogging. Sprint for 30 seconds then jog 30 and alternate for 5 minutes.

Isn't like every sport like that?
 
If it's your first year, don't sweat not qualifying (but don't set the bar too low). Get a good feel of the trails you run (my district run the same ones every year), and just get used to running A LOT.

It would be a good idea to choose the right kind of foods to eat. Like things with a lot of protein and carbohydrates.
 
Well my friend prepares for cross country by running on different terrain. Run some hills, maybe some woods, beaches if available, etc. And also, every sport is a cult, no exceptions. :D There isn't one sport that doesn't prefer people who play it over people who don't. That is just how sports work.
 
I used to run cross country at school, I was the champion for my year group, I set school records and I came 3rd in a district school cross country race with 100's of competitors.

When I started cross country I wasn't the best, I was naturally good but there were around 5 of us challenging. I joined a running club, we ran 20 miles through the week. This extra training took me to the next level, I was now the best and winning all of the races. My advice would be to run, run a lot, cover long distances and improve your fitness.
 
Cross country is a great way to gain endurance and stamina. First of all, I would try jogging a couple of times within the week, allowing your body to get used to yourself running. Afterwards, maybe try doing some workout routines, which will allow your body to gain strength and have no problem with you running for cross country. Best of luck to you!
 
When I trained for half marathons, the key is sticking to a running plan . Also eating the right foods to replenish you healthy. It is not easy, but if you have the motivation you will do it.

I find when running (and when you find your comfortable pace) that I think of other things which helped.

Shame my runs these days are designed for football, go slow then quick bursts - they are knackering!!
 
It is important to take in the right nutrition if you are running a lot, to recover and prevent injury. Lots of protein, natural carbs and fat are needed.
