Competitive eating

I don't think it should be considered a sport. Eating is something people do every single day. Most people do it at least 3 times a day. I know if takes a good amount of control to eat like that and not throw it up, but I still don't think it should be considered a sport.

I wouldn't call it a sport as it doesn't promote any activity or healthiness in any way, however it is a talent to possess but I don't know how much training goes into being able to eat multiple hot dogs. I throw up after 3!

If you have to train for it (yeah, even for eating) and if you compete against other people, then I consider it a sport regardless of the activity.

I've always had issues with defining a "sport."

Is it a competition? Hell yes. Do they train? Yes.

"Sport is all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants" is the listed definition so no it isn't a sport if you are going by this since physical fitness is not a consideration.

I think it's awesome either way, haha. I don't think I'd consider it a sport but it doesn't make it less competitive.

I think you just have to be born with ability to be able to hold all that food in. I'm sure you can train yourself but that will only take you so far. I do admire the people that do it though. Especially the hot dog eating contest. I wouldn't even think about putting that many weiners in my mouth in public...

Competitive eating is... well, different. It is not like any of the "typical" sports. People who want to do something like that are probably a little crazy. I can say that yes, it does take a lot of training. Training equal to or greater than what athletes do. It is quite amazing, but strange. I still don't think it qualifies as a sport, though.

I personally think that anything under an official organization where people compete against one and other has the right to be labeled a sport. I don't see why people get so picky on the right to claim the label "sport". Maybe its not your cup of tea but to some people it might be there only passion in life and they dedicate them-self to it 100% some maybe just a pastime. Regardless I think their should be an organization body that regulates new sports to get the title claiming "sport" I'm sure their is but I'm to lazy to google right now.

Again, back to the discussion of what should be defined as a sport. While it's a challenging task, I would refrain from calling it a sport and only refer to it as a hobby. Although, I know I wouldn't be able to eat that much food in a short amount of time. Good way to gain weight though :D

I thought that too at first. But if you see that hotdog contest at coney island. The japanese guy and the skinny fighter fighter are the ones that win. And they are practically skin and bone. But they are always putting down like 40 hotdogs

The only time I've seen this was at Coney Island. They were having that ridiculous hot dog eating contest. I never had to barf so bad in my life

lol :D THat's funny. you barfed because of how ridiculously speedy (and disgusting?) they were eating but I assume they didn't considering the amount they ate. Would love to watch competitive eating live one day.

This would probably be the same reaction if I ever saw them live. Even watching the show "Man vs Beast" where the Kobayashi guy was competing against the bear, triggered my gag reflexes a few times. Especially when he was struggling to hold it down.

Kobayashi is actually the japanese guy that one the Coney Island hotdog eating contest a few times. And yeah, it's horrible. They were just scarfing down dogs like 4 at a time. And hardly even stopping
