Cancelling Cable and going to online streaming?

I'm thinking of cancelling our cable ($72 a month) and watching everything on TV thru our wii and wifi. Anyone do this? We have netflix already ($8 a month). Are there other Wii channels that allow us to watch tv on our wii?

I've also heard you can hook up your laptop to your wii/tv and watch thru any of the websites that have video. I guess I need a "cheap basic" laptop and a HDMI cable. As long as our TV has the plugs. You basically watch using your laptop and have the TV screen hooked into the laptop as the "monitor".

Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions, etc?

it has built in WiFi for connecting to the internet, plus plays 3D/blu ray/dvd

When we first got it we did have a Netflix account, but cancelled that in favour of Amazon Prime.

Upstairs just have a VCR and DVD player.

We also have a Kindle Fire and I have the amazon prime for streaming videos. With a hot spot Lex can watch anywhere.
 
GREAT idea unless you or your DH LOVE sports and if that is the case then good luck...this is the ONLY reason why I still haven't dumped cable completely!
 
Me too about the sports. And I would be dancing in the street if my cable bill was $72. I really hate that cable bill.
 
Given the amount of money sports teams make from cable networks I doubt they will ever let their product be streamed for free or even for a fee.
 
We got rid of cable tv last month (phone too because we switched to Ooma). I don't miss it at all. I thought I would miss FOX News, but if I really want to see it I can watch it with live streaming online. I never sit and watch tv. I usually only watch the news sometimes when I am cooking. For that I bring a laptop into the kitchen and set it up on top of our upright freezer. We also got Roku a few months back. It's in the bedroom and, really, I rarely watch it. DD5 watches stuff on it thru Netflix. We have a Wii that the kids watch Netflix on plus the Wii now gets streaming thru Amazon Prime. We got some video credit for connecting thru our Wii (I think it was $5. Pretty sure it was posted on MUM within maybe the last month). We also have XBox which I believe gets something. The kids watch tv and so does dh, but I could really care less for it.
 
We are in the process of switching over. I doubt we'll get cable when we move. We got a Roku and have Amazon Student so we get Prime videos. I have one last DVD to watch before we switch over to Netflix streaming. I figure we'll add Hulu Plus once we actually dump cable. It depends on how fast the house sells and if the staging lady insists on moving our TV away from the cable.
 
We don't watch sports, so no problem there.

What's Roku?

I'm wondering if it's worth paying $75 a year for Amazon streaming.

I've heard Hulu Plus wasn't that awesome. That you can get same shows with Hulu as Hulu Plus just that you get them a bit earlier on Plus.

So with the DVD player with wifi - can you go to say fox.com and watch videos?
 
Roku is a box that channels streaming content to your TV. There are loads of free channels we haven't investigated yet, but it brings Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu Plus onto your TV. The only reason I'd go with Hulu Plus is that I don't have a computer hooked up to the TV (we have an old TV, no HDMI or anything) so I can't watch Hulu there. I just want to be able to watch network shows. There are a few that aren't available there so I would have to watch them on the computer.

I like the Amazon Prime because I have a Kindle and I also enjoy the shipping benefits.
 
My brother gets Amazon Prime each year and he "shares" it with me, so I can get free shipping. Him and my other brother and family live in CA and we live in IL so it's worth it for free shipping on gifts. This costs me nothing.

In researching, I have to "upgrade" for $75 a year to get streaming for free. Only the "main" Prime member gets free streaming.

Everything I've ever wanted to do I could, but there are 10 million things you can do these days so I can't say that it will do everything.
 
This really interests me but you need to dumb it done for me please. lol I have NO CLUE about any of this or where to begin. I have wifi the kids have a WII and we have a blueray that has not been out of the box since we got it as a gift a year ago. I am tired of $110 for Directv, $80 for phone and internet.
 
If you have a Wii with wifi you can pay $8 a month for Netflix and add a channel to your Wii for it. Then you can anything available on Netflix on your TV for your $8 a month.

There is also a "channel" on the Wii for Amazon live streaming and one for Hulu Plus. Both of these have shows and movies available - you can watch them on your TV. There is also a FREE Wii channel for YouTube - so you can search You Tube and find lots of episodes of TV shows there too.

One of my friends has hooked up her TV as the "monitor" for her laptop. She browses the internet on her big TV and just goes out to the free streaming online videos and watches them on her TV.
 
I got Dh to get rid of cable for a month...now the NBA playoffs are coming and it is either let him lave to watch them and leave me with kids every night or get cable back :lol:

We are thinking we will get rid of it again int he summer and just bring it back for football.

Why can't you just have antenna to get free network TV and have Netflix or whatever for movies or some cable shows. That is what we do but I'm thinking of cancelling Netflix and going to something else. Maybe I'm missing something as to what you are trying to get in that case ignore me lol.
