When I was younger, I thought that cheering and cheer dancing were the only inspiration to athletes. Then I heard about basketball poems and i browsed about them and found a lot.

Do they really inspire athletes (not just basketball players, I think)? Do coaches really use them to motivate his players?

Below is an example:
So you and I know deeper down there is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit, of fighting on when others quit,

Of playing through not letting up, it’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more until we gain the winning score,
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead, of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,

If bravely we have given all, for who can ask more of a man
than giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from - Victory.
And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind,

It’s you and I who make our fates, we open up or close the gates,
On the Road Ahead or the Road Behind.

I doubt it..This looks like something out of a movie, the chance of a coach saying this to his team are pretty slim in my opinion.

I doubt coached actually use them to inspire their players, I also can't see that many players being so into poetry that it would actually inspire them.

I personally don't think that poems helps players compete to win games. Either they do it for the love of the sport and find it down deep or they don't have it period. I do think that coaches has a part in that process to motivate his team. That is my opinion anyways.

I don't think this could inspire me. Athletes need to get pumped up on adrenelin and motivated. They need loud, aggressive, and short talks. I can't see any player being able to focus through out a poem when they are trying to get pysched up.

I don't think people get inspired by poems these days. However the officials can get a team specific poem and use it to highlight the past glory to inspire the players.

I think that reading poems before a game would be very boring and a waste of time. Bring out the hot cheerleaders!

Well, if you haven't noticed basketball players are not exactly people of great culture, so the poems are a waste of time. Add a hip-hop beat to it, insert 2-3 f words and you will catch their interest.

I highly doubt real coaches say anything like that in real games, movies aren't a very good representation of most things and sports are no different. Especially considering the way a lot of basketball players behave I doubt they'd even pay attention to something like that.

This is an interesting find! I doubt a lot of coaches use these, but it may work with some players. You never know how they think. A lot of them are actually very intellectual, and honestly you would probably need all the inspiration you can get to play professional sports because there is a ton of pressure for you to win it.

Ahm are there even such things as a basketball poem? Well I have never heard of them till today and I'm quite taken back by the idea. You see, I was in high school not that long ago. And I watch basketball practice, actual games even, but when a coach wants to inspire his team he yells and curses at them. That is their motivational tool not recite poems at them. If that would even happen I'm sure that the team will loose hard! It will be embarrassing and painful to hear that the players kill their self off. Hahaha....

It's pretty funny to see a coach reciting a poem to his team. Although we shouldn't generalize that all basketball players need adrenaline-high motivators, I still don't think that poems are a good way of getting them pumped up. Not many people have great appreciation to poetry and it would be best to make the normal prep talk.

Some players may find it helpful, but probably not most. Before a game, players want to feel energized and hyped up. The most common method I see this done is with music. Poems set more of a calm atmosphere.

Basketball poems sound amazing and completely motivational. I like the rhyme and sense within these poems. It really brings out the feel of playing the game.
