We have State Farm Insurance...we currectly hold 7 policies with them and will be adding another one soon. At the present time we are receiving all discounts applicable. Well, State Farm just launched a new program called Drive Safe & Save..and now that I have two underaged drivers...I'm looking to save...insurance payments are killing me!

Yay or nay to having State Farm spy on us to save up to 50 percent...at least that is what State Farm says..

There is no video. I guess they track your "mileage, turns, acceleration, braking, speed and time of day vehicle is operated.

That could get me to change my vote to "Yay" then. :giggles: The American Family one is a video that activates whenever the car makes a sudden different movement.

We talked to our Allstate agent about it (they were only offering up to 30% though) and decided against it. Our agent didn't seem sold on it either.

I have state farm and haven't heard of this offer. I just had my 17 year old put on my insurance. Just curious as to how the program works. How do they track you? Not sure I would want that? What if by some odd chance you were sick and someone else had to drive your car --and they didn't drive as safe as you are---I am talking an emergency--then what to they do? Do they jack up your insurance rates-if you fail their test?
Sometimes too--you are in a situation where you have to break suddenly or do something that is not normal--it just happens and is being a better driver--how do they judge that?

We do have our kids watch the video and track how long they drive to save the 15%--but not sure I would want some other way of tracking the vehicle

I heard of this at Statefarm. I have to go this week and have to find out about putting DD on our insurance so I will ask again how this works. I just haven't yet because they both just turned 17 and I'm afraid to look at the price when DH and I are paying $250 every six months.

No way! They will use it against you anyway they can. This is a prime example of how these fleas work. I got in an accident in 2002. Minding my own business got T-boned by another vehicle pulling out of a vet hospital. The woman had her foot in the tank because the speed limit is 50 and cars moving fast. She shoved my car so far that the drivers side of the car was on the median after the hit. My insurance tried to NOT pay the claim because they said I was driving on the median. NOT!!! Very few people actually know this but when they drive on those yellow drawn on medians, if you hit or are hit insurance will not pay because cars are not supposed to drive on them, only cross to enter private driveways. I hate insurance companies.

Not a fan of State Farm today. DH got rear-ended a week ago today while stopped at a stop light by a State Farm insured driver. They still do not know if the car he was driving was insured by them, someone else or if at all. We have no rental since our insurance policy doesn't have rental. I feel like Barb,no car and can"t go anywhere. We both work so we are begging and borrowing friends and families spare cars. DH's car is on the borderline of being totaled. We are good driver's so this is no fun!

Can you file a claim with your insurance company? Your insurance company can go after the other driver's insurance to get reimbursed.

Get ready for sticker shock....I could not believe how much it is to insure the kids....that is why I am pondering this...If I decide to do it I am hopeing that the kids will drive safer than they do now knowing that they are monitered...I told them if my insurance goes up they are paying the difference or they will not drive.

We still have a year to go before our oldest child will be driving but DH called to check what insurance rates will be and it's crazy how much kids are to insure but my question/thought process is.....

Does it make more sense to get DS16 his own policy with a totally different company than all of our other policies in case he gets in an accident and they want to raise all our rates?

Any thoughts on this?

Get a quote from essurance for your auto insurance. We had State Farm and they were going to raise our rates over a claim that someone filed against my dh (he accidentally had a door ding on another car and he gave the guy his insurance info) The guy was being an a$$hole and reported it and never followed through with the claim and dropped it. (all he needed was a vial of touch up paint as it was only scratched according to dh). Anyhow, they were going to raise our rates b/c of that and I almost went crazy on them.

Sooo... long story short, dh got a quote from essurance and we saved $1000 a year for coverage for both of our cars! State Farm will do whatever they can to drop you or raise your rates.

Sounds like Progressive snapshot thing that records how you drive including when. I would ask, do you have good kids that aren't wild risk takers (ie drive safely and obey the rules as a gut feel based on other things KWIM?) I'd go for it. If you have let's say wilder kids, I'd stay away  since you'd probably be offered a higher premium than now.

In general, the idea of another big brother device even if I do nothing wrong would sort of freak me out.
