I've only really ever done voluntary work to help me gain a better chance for my future. I worked as a learning support assistant in my high school voluntarily for about 2 months. For the first month and a half I was working alongside the younger children, aged 11 - 13, with learning difficulties and special needs. I also helped with a German girl who came to the country and was living with one of the teachers and his wife for two weeks while she joined me in the work I was carrying out.

I also participated in a summer school for two weeks, where we kinda helped children from primary school about to come to high school, gain some extra skills while keeping them entertained and fed.

I have thought about going to less fortunate countries to help out, but I'm pretty sure I'd be less help than if I were doing something for them hear, like Read International where I help with my old college to raise money to send books to the less fortunate.

Have you ever participated in voluntary work? Whether it's been for experience or just to help out?
Would you consider participating in voluntary work?
Would you ever voluntarily go to a third-world country to help the less fortunate?

Would you consider participating in voluntary work? Yes.
Would you ever voluntarily go to a third-world country to help the less fortunate? Yes. I was actually looking into planning a trip to Africa not too long ago.

I'd love to go help in another country, they do provide you with shelter and food, as well as vaccinations, so yeah.

Right now I'm volunteer firefighter, but that doesn't mean I don't get paid, we do in certain seasons.

Yes, I've volunteered in nursery's, looking after children, also I have been on sports day for children so they have something to do outside of school etc

Yes

I would really love to do this, but I need to study and I wouldn't get the time off work.

I only have for work experience and it lasted 5 months of so. It was in a tattoo shop near me.

I wouldn't mind volunteering again and I probably will in the Primary School that my aunt works out to help me get an apprenticeship or job in that field. I'd also do the thing where (you have to pay) go to Africa and help in a shop or something.

I'd find it fun although homosexuality isn't taken that nicely in many African countries so if there was any anti-gay laws in that particular one then no I wouldn't I go there and help at all.

I swear you have to pay for it all though? Like vaccinations and stuff in the long term

I honestly didn't think that this many people would consider going to third-world countries.

Tommy it's a shame really. However first-world countries are still in the process of completely coming to terms with homosexuality. It's pretty appalling.

Raven I hope you don't see me selfish for this reason. I just don't want to go to any country where it's illegal to be gay haha. The sad thing is, while some of these African countries are actually progressing to a more equal society, Russia is going backwards! :/

Tommy I most certainly do not. Being gay is something you are, and cannot physically change without being super unhappy for the rest of your life. I don't think anyone should expect you to go to a country, specifically to help them when you will be condemned and ridiculed for your orientation.

Unfortunately, no country is perfect and it shows. The powers of the countries are constantly trying to prove themselves, almost as in a competition, to other countries. Like when trying to build the tallest or widest buildings and so on. Apparently using that money to improve the lifestyles and culture of their country is not as important as a building.

Even if you want to help out, but cannot take yourself to those countries to do so, there are many things you can do out of the country which can still help out those countries. Although it's not being there personally and experiencing it all, you're still helping - which is a lot more than many people in the world do.

Raven Yeah, I guess. I really should get involved in more volunteer work I guess. I tried to volunteer with animals when I was 16 but they said I'm too young, guess I can retry for that haha. I'd like to try help another country though definitely. Thread's made me think about it all again haha

Tommy when I was part of a writing group at college, we sold our own anthologies and sent the money to Read International. I still work with my old college tutor to help out a bit - but I one day plan to join them in the more physical involvement, such as packing the books and stuff.

It helps the less fortunate countries in gaining a better chance at an education and getting a better chance in life because of it.

There's just so many things out there, it's pretty hard to decide which ones to dedicate yourself to. :P

I'm sure it is. I'll find something though, got 6 weeks of spare time haha. Riven

i started voluntary work during school, like assisting teachers with office/documentation work, assisting in library & science labs. these experiences helped me a lot in staying ahead during professional life.
i also founded a charity organization with friends pooling our pocket money during my under grad studies, that is now an established organization donating more than 2 million/year
