It's a good idea for web developers to know how to setup databases and use FTP or perhaps an alternative thing. Otherwise, how will they learn. On the other hand, with Softalicous, things are too easy I think.

With forum software I tend to just do everything myself to ensure nothing goes wrong. I know how to do it so it's not difficult at all. But, sometimes I will use softalicious for sites like Wordpress because I'm just too lazy to install it myself lol
