Not poetry, just a short story I wrote.

Last One

Dad, she was wandering around outside of town with no place to stay," I tell my father hoping that he will allow her to stay here. "Her family has been burned out and killed. She's the only one left."

"Well she can't stay here!" replies my father.

"She doesn't have anyplace to go! She'll die on her own!"

"Listen, boy," father replies. "They were burned out for a reason and if we take her in, then we'll be the next ones without a home. Understand?"

"I understand that. But who has to know?" I ask. Then I blurt out, "I won't tell anyone! The secret will be safe with me, well, all of us!"

"Besides that son, where we supposed to keep her?"

"Dad, we can clear a space in the building for her to stay. It won't be much, but it will be out of the weather." I am enthusiastic about keeping her and helping her to live. She whines a little at just the right moment. I start to pat her on the back, but she moves a little away. She is still not trusting anyone that much.

"Okay, but you have to clean out the building and fix her a spot to stay. I can't be part of it." Dad continues, "You do understand, don't you?"

"Yes Dad, I understand." I reply with more enthusiasm, "Dad, you won't regret this, and I won't let you down!"

I run back to the building to clear out a spot. She follows me to the building. I clear and clean the building until she has a place to stay, and a warm corner to lay down.

"Come on, girl," I call to her. Hesitantly, she comes to the corner. As I get ready to tell her she can lay down, she circles and lays down in the corner. I put my hand towards her and she sniffs it a couple of times. "I am your friend, " I say. But she still doesn't allow me to touch her.

As I stand, I notice that she is the most beautiful wolf that I have ever seen. I hope she will stay.

The surprise ending is the way stories are suppose to go.
