I need help from all you experienced garage salers. I was wondering if Memorial Day weekend (like the Friday and Saturday) would be a good weekend. Or should I try a different weekend and avoid the holiday? Thanks in advance.

Agree not a good time. I know my Dad would love to go to them on the holiday, but there really isn't that many and then some aren't even worth it. Enjoy your holiday and plan another weekend.

So, I happened to be at city hall today and picked up a copy of the rules and regulations for garage sales. It has specific verbiage restricting the sale of new items for resale. So what do I do now about my stockpile? I had originally planned on having a separate table labeled NEW ITEMS. Or should I sell my stockpile through other venues?

I actually ran into that when I was running an ad a few years ago. I was told that I couldn't say new items. I avoided it. I also live in a townhouse and the minutes to a meeting mention not selling food. I wasn't sure if it was prepared food or box/canned items. A neighbor was making hot dogs that year also. I did have another garage sale with stockpile items minus the food. I probably won't have a garage sale, too much work by myself. I will be donating alot of used items I have to the people that buy my stockpile items. I have some regurlars and a few people that resell what they buy from me. I prefer to go other avenues than garage sales.

So did you actually take all of the tags off the new items?

I don't know what you mean, like the shampoo and stuff? My sister was selling all of her kids clothes and I had someone ask if I had anything new. I did have a few things in the basement so I brought them up and they had the tags still on them which I didn't pull off.

When I said I avoided it, I meant putting it in the ad if that is what you mean. I still sold items and told me people they were new if they asked. Didn't sell food. Dh said that if anyone asked we could let them know and deal with it, basically if we knew them from past sales we would sell it to them, but explain that we can't sell it to the at a garage sale.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself. What I mean it I have some new items from Target (camis and leggings) that have the tags on. My concern is if I take the tags off people may question me if they're new. If I leave the tags on . . .

I would definately leave the tags on. Sorry I didn't stock pile clothes...lol. I have sold clothes with tags. I didn't put it in the ad, but would sell new items. As long as you are not having a garage sale every weekend I don't see a problem. If you are putting it on craigs list I would mention it. Even in the garage sale ad you could say clothes and that will bring people that are looking for clothes regardless of new/used.

We are only allowed 2 garage sales per calendar year so I need to make the most of both of these sales. Thanks for the insight - this is the first time I will be selling stockpile stuff. I could be specific in the ad i.e., camis and leggings and leave it at that. When people specifically ask for these items (at the garage sale) I can tell them they are new items.

I think that is great. I like the more specific ads rather than something for everyone.

If you can't sell new then I wouldn't refer to anything as "new". If people ask, I would just say that it has never been used.
If something still has tags on, that doesn't make it "new" either. You can have a shirt hanging in your closet for years with the tags still on, is it "new"?
It really doesn't matter how long ago it was purchased to not be "new". If you bought chips last week and they were dirt cheap this week and bought more. Wouldn't you tell your kids to eat the "old" chips first? :giggles:
