One man is brain-dead and another five people are in hospital after an experimental drug was administered to 90 people in a French clinical trial.

There is no known antidote to the drug, the chief neuroscientist at the hospital in Rennes said.

Of the six men in hospital, three could have permanent brain damage, Gilles Edan added.

Reports that the drug is a cannabis-based painkiller have been denied by the health ministry.

A fifth man is suffering from neurological problems and a sixth man is being monitored but is not in a critical condition, Mr Edan said.

The trial, which involved taking the drug orally and has now been suspended, was conducted by a private laboratory in Rennes.

The experimental drug was manufactured by the Portuguese company Bial.

All those who volunteered for the trial have been recalled and the Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation.

Health Minister Marisol Touraine pledged to "get to the bottom... of this tragic accident".

"I was overwhelmed by their distress" she told reporters. "Their lives have been brutally turned upside down".

In multiple updated articles released about a day after the original article was released, it is stated that the French Health Ministry claims that the trial drug did not contain cannabis.
However, the medication is meant to target the endocannabinoid system, the system responsible for pain control and the high that is induced when consuming cannabis.
Just another reason to give a bad reputation to the harmless substance.

Sad story though, hopefully their families get at least some compensation for the irreversible and priceless damage done to their lives.

That's how testing goes though. That's how we find out ahpit side effects. These people knew what they signed up for. Scary soundijg but not shocking.

The problem is they would have signed something stopping the company from having to do that. It's their risk and they know that their was a chance of death. That's the risk of getting paid to do experimental drugs

The thing with medication is even if a medication finishes its trials and is accepted by an area's authorities for its uses, there are always going to be unknown consequences that aren't seen often...And medications are constantly being altered in their information over time. I'm on many medications, and one of the ones I was on that I was put on because it /wasn't/ a narcotic...was recently put on the narcotics list at a fairly high level. Your risk, even after an experiment, isn't always known. That's why there are disclaimers.

Another thing with experimental drugs though is that you have to make certain alterations to your current treatment many times: I get offers to take part in trials all the time, but the moment they find out I have certain issues or am on other medications, they ban me because they're worried. I think it'd be nice to know more about the other things involved in the health backgrounds of the people that were harmed/badly influenced by this medicinal test. I hope they all recover well, or the best they can. >w<

Not sure what they will get to the bottom of, these people tested some things and ended up with the short end of the stick.
