I find a bit sad that the legendary Live Messenger (also known as MSN Messenger) is closing down in 2013. Before Facebook, me and my friends used to spend hours on Messenger chatting away. Honestly, I didn't believe this day would come so soon - the end of the Messenger. I've never really liked Skype. :(

Code:
Microsoft has announced it intends to "retire" its instant message chat tool and replace it with Skype's messaging tool.

I always thought MSN stunk. I've been a Yahoo guy since I started out online back when it was called Yahoo Pager.

Skype is a pretty great platform too though it take a bit of getting used to.

I'm always using Windows Live. Looks like Yahoo messenger or AIM will be my new choice of communication once Windows Live shuts down.

Wow, really?

I still use it almost daily to communicate with old friends. To be fair, I do it through Trillian so I'm not actually using the client any more, but I still use the usernames and connections there.

I've been a trillian fan for a while as well, I'm pretty sure if msn closes down, the msn part will not work anymore. :(
Might try to get your friends on another client before you can't contact them anymore.

Yeah, I guess so. This is the first I'm even hearing of this news.

Do you have a link to the source? I'm curious how exactly they're doing the switch, if they're phasing it out, if the names will still exist and simply be converted to Skype ones, etc...

It looks like you have until March of 2013

I imagine your current messenger logins will just work on Skype with minimal effort. Haven't read any of the articles, but it's the obvious way to to it.

The whole move makes a lot of sense also. I mean, why pay to maintain two separate programs that do a very similar job.

MSN used to be the s*it. Everyone I knew used it a few years back, and that is why everyone wanted to have a hotmail account (which they still keep!). I started using MSN when I was about 12-13. It was a good platform, even though it used to crash a lot for me. Now, I have a Skype account, but I don't use it at all.

Oh it's definitely the obvious way to do it.

Unfortunately, MSN has rarely been "obvious" or logical in the past. It's part of the reason I don't actively use their sites and messengers....and only use the usernames via other programs, lol.

Wow that comes as a surprise to me. Windows Live Messenger was the messenger that I used the most other than Skype. I guess it'll just be Skype for me soon unless some of my contacts also use YIM.

I've never seen someone legitimately "hacked" in any way, these are most likely phishing attacks "oh did you see what so and so said about you" which could happen on just about any platform so to say this is only an msn user issue is a bit ignorant to be honest.

Strongly disagree with you on that. There are some who use messenger just to troll others and to stalk those they hate. Best thing to do is to get rid of it.

That might be true, but trolling happens everywhere. My point was people who "get hacked" generally have weak passwords, fall victim to phishing, have weak security questions etc etc.
