What brands do you use? Which ones work best for you? Do you notice a difference between different detergents?

I've made my own several times. If I can't get it for .50-1.00 then I make my own. :)

I also think the others do a fine job cleaning the clothes, but nothing smells as good as tide does when it's done and out of the dryer. IMHO

Consumer Reports rates how well different detergents remove different kinds of stains if you're interested in actual data. They even get into it by variety (i.e., Cold Water Tide, All Free and Clear HE, etc). I can find the issue with the most recent detergent ratings and share if anyone is interested.

I'm like MrsMom- I'll use whatever is $1.00 or less. I've made my own before, too. If there isn't a deal soon, I'll be making it again.

I am not too picky, and am living off a stock pile of All liquid and Purex sheets. But I do no think I will ever go back to Xtra or the like (unless it is free) because it is so watery, I feel the need to use double at least and that defeats the cheap price.

But will use anything just about for under $.50, just won't pay full or regular sale price for the real cheap stuff

Of course Tide smells so good, but I also have a stockpile of All, Xtra and Purex and they all work fine. I add in a little of the Tide stain booster (free with Q) when I wash soiled clothes with the other brands, don't really notice any huge difference, but I don't spend my time looking at my laundry, when it's done, it's done.:-)

I have tried many... and I have no issue with any of them really. My husband always knows when it isn't tide as he will break out with psoriasis.... so I only buy tide and stock up when its on sale.

Pre-coupon days I always used Tide. Now I mostly use All. My last big buy was mostly the All free and clear. I just noticed recently that everything seems dirtier than usual. Not sure if it is the detergent or if things are just getting old. I'll have to try adding some stain booster. I hate the tide release pods. They don't disintegrate fully and I have residue on everything.

Nope...from Xtra to All to Arm and Hammer..really no difference.

I do think Tide works best.....but is not $11.99 best...all the others do a fine job.

I agree. I buy whatever is on sale. Since my washer broke earlier this year I now have to buy HE detergent. Old washing machine definitely did a better job than the new one. Guess that's what happens when you use less water. Although this one spins the hell out of the laundry so I don't have to put it in the dryer as long.

I have to use a Free and Clear and unscented kind. I've used All and Arm and Hammer and see no difference.

I am deal loyal not brand loyal. When able to get a deal on Tide and use it I feel rich :)

Currently using Arm and Hammer and while the clothes are getting clean I do think it is watery. I'm having to use more vs a concentrated product so i'm not clear what if anything i'm saving.

Anyone care to share their homemade detergent recipes?

1 bar Fels-Naptha or Dr Brommer's castile soap, grated(I find the finer the grate, the better)
1 cup Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
1 cup Borax
1/2 cup OxiClean

Mix ingredients in a gallon size baggie or ice cream bucket. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load, depending on size or dirtiness.

You could also use Ivory bar soap or whatever you have. I have used both Fels-Naptha and the Dr Bronners and love both!

Wish I had a stockpile of free or less than .50. I buy ajax, a&h and Dynamo when it's cheaper than $1.50 a bottle on sale at shoprite. Then I buy like 8 bottles. So I do have a stockpile of that price.

For years I only used Tide unscented then after trying All Free & Clear realized how much money I wasted. Now I'll buy anything unscented, and haven't really noticed a difference. Then again, my clothes don't tend to get really dirty.

I've used All Free and Clear for years. I don't like heavy scent on my clothes, and switched over to using wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets last winter.

That said, I have two messy little children and I find that none of the detergents work as well as they used to. I've used freebie Tide samples and not found that they cleaned any better. I wonder if it's the phosphates, like when they took them out dishwasher detergent.

I stocked up at Jewel on All a couple months ago, and I should be fine for a year or more. I never use as much as they tell you to, and generally don't have a problem. I'm just having more trouble with the kids' stains taking multiple washes to come clean.

I think you hit it exactly, the phosphates.

I've found that I need to presoak more now than before and my kids are actually less messy! It requires some extra time, but it does get the job done.
