Before you assume gadgets and video games fry the minds of the future, consider this: Canadian researchers are finding evidence that the high-speed, multitasking of the young and wireless can help protect their brains from aging.

A body of research suggests that playing video games provides benefits similar to bilingualism in exercising the mind. Just as people fluent in two languages learn to suppress one language while speaking the other, so too are gamers adept at shutting out distractions to swiftly switch attention between different tasks.

"A new study of 100 university undergraduates in Toronto has found that video gamers consistently outperform their non-playing peers in a series of tricky mental tests. If they also happened to be bilingual, they were unbeatable."

Perhaps there is hope for me! LOL Scary part of this - I can't get past the first level of Mario or Donkey Kong! Egad does that mean my number is almost up! Yikes!!

See guys, it is a proved fact that gaming is beneficial to your health!

A friend and I were talking about something like this the other day. We were saying that those of us in Generation X and after will be those who play video games well into adulthood. So does this mean we'll be young forever? Hmmm...I better go jump on my PS2 just to be safe.

With the brain, its use it or lose it. Any sort of mental exercise is helpful, videogaming just happens to be fun. So, unlike most forms of exercise, you don't need an external incentive. However, as with any sort of exercise it is probably best not to rely solely upon videogames. The brain has numerous independant processing centers, and if any of them fall into disuse performance will diminish.

I wonder if the mega hours I have spent here on BA will extend or shorten my life. I know a few posters who wish it were the latter!:p
