Every time I try browsing around on the forums here for a couple minutes, my Netscape 4.72 freezes. This has happened for me on other sites for a long time, but I never was really able to narrow down any that always did it. This one does it every time. Anyone else have this problem? It locks the whole system requiring reboot. I think it mainly does it when scrolling. I'm using a Voodoo 3 w/ newest drivers.

Hi there,

Sounds like a tricky one.. I'll need a little more information:

Which OS are you using?

Do you have Internet Explorer, and have you tried looking around with it to see if it produces the same error?

Have you tried to 'fall-back' to 4.71 of Netscape, or tried 6.0beta yet to see if it goes away?

Do you have any hardware marked with a "!" in device manager?

Most times when you have crashing during scrolling, it's a video driver issue, a mouse driver conflict, or a heat problem (in my experience). Hell, could be ram too. Answer my questions and I'll try to help you isolate this.

Thanks for the report.

I'm using Win98. It never happens in IE. It's happened in the last few 4.x Navigator versions too (4.0x, 4.5x, 4.6x, 4.7x). I'm not sure if it started happening when I started using 4.x (dont think so though), when I switched to Win98 and built this PC (300a@450) which I did both at the same time, or when I later got the Voodoo3. Also it's happened with all of the last few video driver versions I've used though (can't remember on the first ones).

I've often thought about heat, but why would scrolling affect it? And why would it get too hot from just browsing, when I can let it sit on the Unreal fly-by w/ no problems (even w/ the V3 o'clocked). The hotest I've seen the MB get (Abit BH6) is 105 deg. F, but it's locked many times at 100 deg.

No devices w/ the "!".

I wish I'd taken notes when it started happening, which was around 1 1/2 to 2 years ago.

Thanks!

Hey,

Hmm, this sounds like a tough one... I'll probably move this over to the tech forum, perhaps someone will be able to help further..

Regarding your question on scrolling, it can actually be quite processor intensive.. Depends on your video card/drivers however.

As always, in order to isolate something like this, you might have to try something drastic, like rebuilding your PC if you have the knowledge. If their is one sure way to bring down your system in Netscape, use that as a test when putting piece by piece back into your system. No other way works better than this in isolating the problem, but it can sure be a pain in the ****.

May also want to temporarily try a different video card to see if that makes it go away, then you know it might be the voodoo overheating, the drivers, or some video card/driver weirdness with Netscape's scrolling routines. My brain is fried. Keep us updated.

Hey, just dropping a line to let you know I had the same problem with my box and Navigator 4.5 on a first generation TNT. Finally got sick and tired of it and moved over to IE. I haven't had a problem since. I hate to say it, but ever since Netscape was absorbed by AOL, I've seen nothing but problems. Maybe it's my system, but I highly doubt it.
