I do a whole lot of reading on the web, and one thing that caught my eye is when Mashable reported that Facebook is building a search engine - what are your thoughts on this? Do you think Facebook can really compete against Google in terms of search?

Here is an article on this:

If you can find anymore articles, feel free to share them

I don't know if this is true, but in as much as google met some search engines on its way up and outrun them, then facebook can also do the same. Its not that simple, though.

FB already has a search engine though it doesn't encompass the whole web. FB's internal search algo is pretty good.

I seriously doubt FB has the computing power to index the web. I could see them partnering with Bing or Yahoo though.

I have read this 2-3 years ago. Facebook is trying to make their website as a one stop shop of sort for the web kinda like what google is the first choice search engine of the internet. Facebook cannot be the "one stop shop" of the internet if they don't have a search engine.

It wouldn't be surprising.

Look at it this way. They probably feel Google is stepping in on their "turf" with the Google + thing. So Facebook developing their own search engine could be a way of trying to counteract what Google sort of did.

Really completely un-ncessary. So what? They want to be able to log all your searches too along with the rest of your personal information?

Considering the number of people that are annoyed with the "forced" facebook changes, I can see them going the same route with their search engine. Google tends to allow a lot more freedom with it's products and cares about their users opinions, something that facebook fails horribly at.

I can't even see facebook out ranking yahoo or bing.

Yeah you make a good point with that. Facebook might be taking on a bit more than they really should with this one. I can understand wanting to strike back at Google for making a social network comparable to theirs. But they have to be able to actually satisfy their current audience before they broaden in the manner that they're trying to.

I'll believe it when I see it...I don't tend to comment on rumours, lol

That's true. It's not like you can fully get behind anything without hard evidence. But I do think it's likely however. I remember when Google making a browser was just a rumor way back when. Yet look where we are now on that one.

I don't think FB should create a search engine. Competing in a search engine arena is completely different from social networking scene and I hope FB realizes that before investing millions of dollars. Bing and Yahoo have tried very hard to grab search engine traffic and so far Google is still far, far ahead.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that people wouldn't use it. If there's no demand or interest for it, I'm not sure why Facebook would logically try to push and put that many resources into something that's likely just going to fail. It wouldn't make sense...which well, I know is FB's specialty sometimes, lol, but I still don't see it happening.
