So, I was watching the news the other day as you do, and I came across some facts about England.

Mostly, it was do to with how much money this country spends on translators alone.

This got me thinking on how rude it is to expect England as a country to spend money that could be used for something more valuable such as homelessness.

I always try everytime I go into another country to speak the language they are comfortable with, but each day other countries our language.

So I ask you is it fair that we have to pay this amount of money so they are happy.

Or should they know English before they get here?

They should seriously learn the language first.

When I cross the Mexican border, I know enough Spanish to get by in shops, hotels, and street vendors. A good thing because not everyone speaks English. Should I be going to another country (on vacation or otherwise), I'd spend a year or two learning that language for much the same reason.

It's courtesy, nothing more. Sadly, most people don't feel the need to be courteous.

lol slack.

It makes me laugh with dvd's now...when you have to select a language...

english is the last one you can select...after THREE pages

I am sick and tired of this bullshit, if you go to a foreign country you should speak the language. Or at lease pay for your own translator. I am sick of how this country caters to people of other languages. I heard in Florida if you don't speak Spanish you can't get a job, how wrong is that? I refuse to learn another language for these people, if they want to deal with me LEARN ENGLISH YOU DUMB ****S.

Welcome to my world, folks. Now you can better understand what it is like to live in an ENGLISH country and be bumped back to second on the list. Press 2 for English use to be press one for English. In addition, the minute the answering machine answered the voice spoke English first and then French. Now it speaks French and still speaking French the recorded voice gives French instructions to press 2 for English!

Millions of dollars are wasted on translating everything into both French and English.

The French around here can't read French for God's sake so I fail to see why we bother printing French!

A perfect example of this happened this Christmas. A local store ordered French Christmas stickers and French Christmas cards. After Christmas every French card and thousands of packages of French Christmas stickers were left over. The store couldn't even give them away!

The French bought English cards and stickers. Unfortunately, some English people were unable to get English cards and stickers because they had been sold out first. We can blame that on the French who refuse to purchase anything written in French because they can't read it.

lol, calm chris.

To be honest I don't see too much of a problem with them speaking their own native language, its more that we have to pay for it.

It comes out of our wages to pay because they cannot be bothered to pick up an english translation book.

This does not mean however that I expect all people in the world to use english, but it does help if you know some sententces or even a few words of a very common language.

Thats why I was crazy for leaving Brooklyn, it was like that everyday. Ever since I came here people have only spoke English and it was clear and understandable English. Also every store front was written in English. Not to mention people seem to be kinder here.

English should be the primary language in this country and every other language in the far second position. You should be forced to learn and write English if you want into this country.

lol, for once I agree with mr.nice (no wonder it's raining).

This will continue to get so politically correct that english/americans will be pushed aside in effect to be ''nice'' to other cultures.

EXCUSE ME BUT I WAS HERE FIRST.

kthnxbi.

Yea English came first, my ancestors learned the language and everyone else that wants into this country should do the same. I am sick and tired of being nice when these people that want us to tolerate their language aren't nice.

Truer words were never spoken!:applaus: Just wait and see what it feels like when they take YOUR country and YOUR rights away from you. Bit by bit like an insidious, sneaky cancer they are consuming you and people are just sitting back allowing it to happen because they are so afraid of being considered Not Politically Correct.

I concur with your assessment: it is a waste of tax payer's money. Alas, I believe using tax payer money to assist the homeless is also a waste of tax payer money. ;)

I believe the government has no business spending money on individuals, period. In my world, all tax payer money would be spent on items for the GENERAL GOOD of EVERYONE, such as parks, roads, libraries, etc.

I speak 2 languages fluently (english, thai) and can understand basic conversation in another five (german, dutch, norweigan, russian, Lisu- a headhunter tribe from northern burma). I can read and write in a dozen languages (english and latin based alphabets, thai and other khmer/sanskrit based alphabets, russian/greek and other cyrillic based alphabets, and the phonetic latin-symbol languages that the hill tribes in southeast asia have been given mostly by christian missionaries).

does this mean I'm tolerant of other people who go to a country and demand instructions and information in their own language? no, quite the opposite. I get quite pissed when I see mexicans demanding spanish language telephone service and road signs, because I've had to learn to deal with several languages that are infinitely more complex with very little help. spanish to english is easy. polish to english is still relatively easy. almost all western languages are very easy to translate, but when you get into the various ethnic groups in places like southeast asia (where I live) and africa (where I have friends who work or are from there), then I can see how some standard would be in demand- and here, it isn't. everybody has one language that they are allowed to deal in for official transactions (banking, going to a police station, making a phone call, etc) and their demands for 'in my language!' are flatly ignored. as a result of this, many of the tribespeople I meet here are stunning linguists. I met a kachin (another burmese headhunter tribe) man who can fluently speak 12 languages and has forgotten another three or four from when he was a child.

so why is it that when the country is rich the people whine more?
