For watching movies: DVD
For recording shows: VHS

There's still no practical way around that.

Better selection of what?

I have a VCR in my room connected to my computer so I can capture to the computer and send avi files to VHS tapes. Plus I have my digital camera set up to tape to VHS.
On my main TV, I have a DVD connected into the TV and then a dual VCR deck (which by-passes the copyright code, shhh don't tell anyone).

So when I rent movies, I've been getting mostly DVD's since I've been able to play them. But I still get VHS tapes since there's a much wider selection, of old and new, and if I don't feel like watching it that night, or I rent two, I can make a copy for later.

I use DVD, but VCR's are essential to tape that soapie which I'd die if I missed since they are always at a crucial point in the plot *sigh*
Also many Video shops have wonderful old movies that make one cry into your popcornies..

I use a VCR...call me old fashioned

I'm not all too anxious to get a dvd player either, so I'm content living my archaic technologically-deprived life

I use a vcr for taping, movies I only have on vhs and renting when I can't find what I want on DVD or am at a location lacking the necessary dvd player.

my eyes, the goggles do nothing

i'm the only one in my family who uses vhs anymore, i use it to watch those animes that aren't out on dvd yet.. to tape shows i just use the satellite reciever, we have this model that allows you to record 8 hours of stuff on it, no tape needed! it's great

DH & I are dinosaurs with the 3 vcrs too.
Refuse to give in to DVD till
1. there is a way to record on them (you can't do that right?)
2. the prices come down
3. the vcrs all go kapute

Gee, kinda feel about vcrs the way I felt about my 8 tracks when cd's came out.

1) There are recorders out there, but most must be imported from Japan, and are not worth the cost because you give up certain features in the recording process.

2) You can regularly find a decent DVD player for $150 or less.

The one thing that really makes DVD stand out is the sound. Without a home theater setup, you're probably missing out on 50% of the benefits.
Unless you're willing to go the extra step and get a home theater receiver and the appropriate speakers, it's really not worth it.
However, if you are willing to go the distance, you may never go out to the movies again. I thought the landlady's dog was gonna poop itself when we put on Saving Private Ryan in DTS.

Poor puppy <IMG SRC="http://server3005.freeyellow.com/mouse7088/dog3.gif" border=0>!

Well, DVDs sound great but that is down the road in this house.

The dog was the funniest thing.
When you play a DTS title, it starts off with a surround sound demo.
The dog literally ran around the room following the sound coming out of the speakers.

When I was watching Jurasic Park, my dog started looking out the window during the scene where they can hear the T-rex's footsteps and the water vibrates etc. He didn't know what animal was making the sound, but he knew it was big and outside somewhere. lol

Must admit I would love to watch my family as I played a horror movie on one. Hee, hee, think it would freak em out?

i actuallt recently purchased a new vcr when my old one died. i have to be able to tape pokemon. (shut up) and we had 3 vcrs in my house until our roommate moved out. but we still have one vcr per person. but also 1 dvd per person. nyah nyah...

We still use our two VCRs...DVD players are still too expensive (god bless Australian retailers ripping us off)...I think it'll be several years before we end up getting one.
