This is my wifes rant. Not really sure how to handle this. She was at the gym the other day, probably 20 or so other women in the locker room. Here comes some new lady with her 8 year old boy. Well, most of the women are either half or undressed and this 8 year old boy is just standing by her mother watching everyone. My wife didn't think this was appropriate. Besides this, we have seen mothers bringing their 6 to 10 year old boys into the womens restroom, and I have seen men bring in their 5 to 8 year old daughters (I hope) into the mens room. Is this something to really rant about? We realize that when you have to go, you have to go. And some children develop at different speeds.

I would talk with the management of the place. I mean that is way too old. At the gym I went to there was a sign outside the locker rooms that said if they didnt wear dipers then boys couldnt be in the womens locker room. That may be a bit extreem, but I think it should be cut somewhere around 3-4 years old.

I pretty much agree with moonsee's assessment.
At 8 years old, that young boy is old enough to wait outside for the 10 minutes it will take his mother to get changed.

yeah, anything under three is fine, but older than six, that's where i'd draw the line. besides, my son would be making googly eyes at all the half-naked women

I'm ok with them in the restrooms, I mean, most women's restrooms I've ever been in have stalls with doors.

But locker rooms, I think any boy that's old enough to be going to school is too old to be going in a women's locker room. I had this happen to me just the other day, some woman didn't know the day care was closing early at the gym, so she brought her 3 kids into the locker room with her, two were boys who shouldn't have been in there. I was pretty uncomfortable. I thought they should have made this chick go home and blow-dry her hair there. (she'd already gotten dressed to go get them from the day care). Bah.

i dont necessarily see a problem with it, but other women in the locker room have the right to not want women to bring their sons in with them. it's kinda like how we should have the right to not have to see the fat woman sitting on the benches butt-nekkid putting lotion and power on... ::hurl:

seriously, though, that is what family locker rooms are for. and if this establishment does not have them, they should. for cryin out loud, my tiny little school gym has one. and it is mostly used by the female teachers to change privately. they lock the door. i think this defeats the purpose and can't just take over a locker room... but that is another issue....

Personally, I think any kid older then 8 can wait outside for 7 min. without running into trouble. I dunno why he has to come in.

I am sure it made the women there comfortable. But, in Europe, I doubt it would be a big deal. I lived in Southern Spain for 2 years, topless women isnt a big fuss but it wasnt a great sight either.

Although, there were plenty of topless women walking around where I lived (its a touristy town), it isnt that scandrelous as you would imagine. First of all, you can actually see soft-porn on regular non-cable TV and all of Madonnas music videos that are censored in the States. Secondly, a lot of women there really, really, really should not be seen in public topless...not sexy ::shudders::

seriously, an 8 year-old boy being goggly-eyed at topless women is an American thing. Any Euro Magazine would make Playboy look like a Sears catalogue.

i agree. it's just not an issue in other countries.

for me personally...I wouldn't stand for it.
First of all....if you have to drag your small child to the gym....then pick another day to workout!
I have a 6, 7 and 8 yr old....and I wouldn't impose on anyone by bringing any of them into a locker room....but then again....if I didn't have a sitter for them...I wouldn't be going to workout on that day either.

Hmmm....

Is this woman european or something??? They are more cool about this, then Americans...actually, other countries in general (not necessarily europeans).

Otherwise, I think she should know better than making everyone uncomfortable. have you talked to anyone, staff, other women about it?
