Hey guys. I've been considering signing up for the Royal Navy for 5 years and was wondering what everyone thought about people who join the army, navy, RAF etc.?

Also, would you do it and if not why?

Nope. I don't think the wars we're in are justified and I wouldn't trust the government to make choices about justified wars in the future. Not like you have a choice what wars you fight or not. I don't see how you can justify killing people you could view as innocent because you're told to.

I'd be a medical assistant or something in that area. I'd never be able to kill people and I think the reasons we're in the war are far from the truth but the experience I'd get from the navy is so great.

I disagree with war in general however I do have respect for people who volunteer medically; that's an actual good cause.

I'm glad, because that's the area I'd go towards. The only reason I'm holding back is because I have no idea how I'm going to last so long away from family and my boyfriend...

I'm not big on the army, and I'm a strong believer that if you have loved ones like a serious boyfriend/girlfriend, or especially a husband/wife/child(ren), that you shouldn't join the armed forces, no matter what poisiton you're planning to take. When you join the armed forces, you're aware that no matter what your position, there's a chance you'll get injured or killed. There's no way around that, that's part of the job.
I don't think it's fair to put a loved one through the grief of losing you if you do get killed or go missing while on the job.
If Michael were to join the armed forces tomorrow, I'd seriously consider leaving him, and he knows it. If he loved me all that much, would he really be willing to put me through the long periods of time away from him, the worry, the grief if I should lose him, and do all by choice?

That's just me though :p
If signing up is what you really want to do and your family/boyfriend are supportive, then go for it and good luck :)

I thought about it when I was younger, but not any more. It doesn't interest me and I don't feel like getting myself killed fighting stupid wars.

If I was fit enough I'd op for Seal team. Other than that a sniper or the air force, but I've never really considered it myself tbh.

Sorry if mentions annoy you... I just find it easier to mention people to make sure they know I've replied. :)

Vampenstine Well, someone's got to do it and there's not enough family and friendless people. Besides, if it's a great chance to get good qualifications and good pay at the same time, with a lot of experience, it's about your future vs being absent currently. Also more people die from car accidents than in the army (a small percentage of soldiers compared to drivers) so it's not that risky... If you really want to make sure your children have parents then don't drive either. I mean, I understand about the whole absence when it comes to children but that's all.

Kirk Fair do's. I don't find out wars justified either. In fact I'd struggle to find any war justified.

Riven To be honest, RAF (Royal Air Force) is so much more appealing and the people seem to be more laid back.

I've considered it. Still am. I'm kind of an army brat, in that a good deal of my family is or have been a part of the military, going back at least three generations. My brother is currently serving in the royal artillery. Overall, I disagree with the ideals behind most of the conflicts we're in, but the military doesn't solely encompass combat. My preferred roles, should I sign up, would either be medical or comms/IT. Plus, it could be a good experience.

When you join any nation's military, what you are doing is losing your entire identity. You cease to be a person. Instead, you become an asset. You are the property of your superiors, and, essentially, the property of your country.

You're a number, or a statistic: one soldier, out of many hundreds and thousands, strategically organized as one small part of a hunting and killing machine.

As a soldier, you are given orders, and you are expected to follow those orders without question - that's what makes the system work to begin with. There is no room for ifs or buts in war; your thoughts, feelings, and opinions are irrelevant. If you're asked to charge the hill with your gun, with little chance of survival, you have no choice but to do it.

You might think you're going to be a medic, a sniper, or a pilot, but that's not the way it works. The moment you enlist in the armed forces, your government can do whatever they want with you. And, you better believe they will make you do something you never planned to do, at some point in time.

Is the glory and honor of being a soldier really worth that? I think not, but to each his own.
